The Daily Chop: Braves blanked by Phillies, Mike Soroka update

Was a tough night for the Braves’ offense on Saturday.

MLB: Atlanta Braves-Workouts John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

The Braves did manage to play their series opener against the Phillies on Saturday evening, but the game did not go exactly as the team had hoped as the offense went completely quiet against Jake Arrieta in Atlanta’s 5-0 loss.

Aside from a pretty crummy offensive performance outside of a multi-hit game from Adeiny Hechavarria, one positive for the Braves from this game was the performance of Kyle Wright. He made a couple of mistakes that J.T. Realmuto and Jay Bruce made him pay for, but overall the start was encouraging on a number of levels including that he pitched six innings.

Again, not the game you want against a team that has seen its struggles and had its rhythm disrupted due to game postponements, but it is what it is.

Justin Verlander is ‘not progressing as quickly as he’d like’

There were reports that he was going to need Tommy John surgery, but he quickly dispelled those rumors and said that he was going to be re-evaluated in a couple weeks. So far, it doesn’t sound like he has been getting much better over that period of time.
