This will be the third time that Atlanta has hosted the All-Star Game. The first came in 1972 at Atlanta Stadium and the last was in 2000 at Turner Field.
In addition to the Futures Game and the Home Run derby, All-Star week will also feature the 2021 MLB Draft. This will be the first time that the draft has ever been held outside of June. It will feature a minimum of 20 rounds with the first night scheduled for Sunday, July 11.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred had this to say about the announcement:
“Major League Baseball is eager for the return of the All- Star Game and for the opportunity to put one of the game’s great new ballparks on a worldwide stage. Tonight marks the start of an exciting journey for the Braves’ organization and its fans as our sport prepares for a thrilling Postseason and for a successful All-Star Week next summer. We are pleased to make our Draft the newest part of 2021 All-Star Week festivities in Atlanta. The All-Star Game is a celebration of baseball, and the Draft will highlight the amateur levels of our great game and its future stars.”
“Today marks a day where we can be optimistic and look towards next July and all the exciting festivities that come along with All-Star Week,” said Terry McGuirk, Atlanta Braves Chairman. “We are delighted to also be a part of the first MLB Draft happening in conjunction of All-Star Week and can’t wait to have the spotlight shine on Cobb County, the City of Atlanta, The Battery Atlanta and of course Truist Park.”
