The Braves announced on Monday afternoon that they have hired team legend and Hall of Famer Chipper Jones as a part time major league hitting consultant.

Although the nature of his part-time capacity is unknown, possibilities include, but are not limited to a role mostly in spring training, or him primarily coaching when the team is in Atlanta so he doesn’t have to travel with the team.

Jones obviously had an incredible career as a player in Atlanta, posting a career wRC+ of 141 over 19 seasons, and he has stayed around the organization in an unofficial capacity in the years since his retirement. Chipper has even worked with players like Dansby Swanson in the past few years on his offensive approach, so this kind of coaching role will be somewhat familiar to Jones, and even some of the players on the roster. It certainly doesn’t hurt to have such an incredible offensive player who has some informal coaching experience on the staff, albeit in a part-time capacity.

***UPDATE*** According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, Chipper envisions being at the stadium about 5-6 hours before most homes games. This allows him to stay at home instead of having to travel with the team.
