Mike Foltynewicz agrees to one-year deal with the Rangers

Mike Foltynewicz was an All-Star and a NLDS Game 1 starter in 2018. Now, he appears headed for Texas.

Per Kiley McDaniel, Mike Foltynewicz will return to the Lone Star State. He will join former Braves Kolby Allard and Charlie Culberson in Texas. He should join such starters as Kyle Gibson and former White Sox Dane Dunning in the bullpen. It is not known if he will be joining the bullpen.

Foltynewicz spent the first half of the season in 2019 with the Braves, and returned after refinding his form and a new wristband in a brief stint in AAA Gwinnett. He pitched a glorious NLDS Game 2 in Atlanta striking out 7 in 7 scoreless innings. He also pitched in Game 5. His velocity waned in 2020, and made one start versus the Rays before being designated for assignment. He would spend the rest of the year in Gwinnett and not return.

His workout earlier his week in Atlanta caught the eye of three MLB teams and the Rangers will be lucky to have him. The reports from that workout session were that his fastball velocity was much improved. Here’s to hoping that the slider comes along as well.

Update - Foltynewicz’s deal with Texas is pending a physical. He will make $2 million plus incentives according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
