In hope of jumpstarting their struggling offense, the Atlanta Braves have recalled Orlando Arcia from Gwinnett. Arcia has hit well for the Stripers all season and recently shifted to left field. To make room on the active roster, Atlanta optioned left-hander Kyle Muller back to Gwinnett.

The Braves acquired Arcia back in April in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for pitchers Patrick Weigel and Chad Sobotka. Instead of adding him to their bench, they sent him to Gwinnett where he could play every day and serve as depth should they have an injury to one of their infielders. Arcia has put up big numbers hitting .303/.380/.552 with 13 home runs and a 145 wRC+.

Arcia has played four games in left field for the Stripers and has exactly four innings worth of experience in the outfield at the Major League level. He has also had limited success at the plate in his career posting a career 71 wRC+ in 542 career games at the big league level. Hopefully he can carry some of that production from the minor leagues over and given Atlanta’s recent struggles, it is worth the risk at this stage.

Some may question to send down Muller. With an off day Thursday, Atlanta won’t need a fifth starter for the final week before the All-Star break. Muller can return to Gwinnett’s rotation and continue to pitch on turn and then could be brought back after the break.
