Do I remember how the past two seasons ended? Yep! Is that stopping me from getting hyped? Nope!

Folks, we’re here once again. It’s Opening Day (for real, this time) and I’m glad to report that on a personal level, both time and wisdom have yet to jade me when it comes to the optimism of baseball season getting underway. I felt the same when I was a kid, I felt the same through adolescence and things have remained the same as I continue to get older. Everybody’s 0-0, everybody’s got a fighting chance but we all know that the Atlanta Braves are going 162-0 and that’s the end of that.

In all seriousness, there’s still plenty of reason to be excited about the Braves heading into 2024. I know that a lot of y’all reading this are smart and you come to this website in particular for smart analysis so I’ll try to give you some of that smart analysis in a quick burst: Braves good. Braves really good. Braves “possibly walk to 100 wins” good. Braves “still favored over a team that spent $1 billion in the offseason” good. Braves that good.

I know that the wounds of the past two Postseason eliminations are still fresh in everybody’s mind. I know that because it’s still fresh in my mind — last year was especially embarrassing because of how it felt like the Philadelphia Phillies really punked the Braves, if we’re being honest. It’s frustrating because it’s difficult to think about how successful the past two regular seasons without thinking about how they both eventually ended in near-identically frustrating circumstances.

Still, it’s good to remember that this version of the Atlanta Braves figures to be very, very good — again. This is a team that won the World Series in 2021, 101 games in 2022 and then another 104 in 2023. They’ve done this with five infielders who all come together like five fingers curled in a fist to wreck any pitching staff out there. They’ve done this with a center fielder who is as dynamic and exciting as any player to roam that area since the days of Andruw Jones and they’re doing it with a dominant right fielder who has made it publicly known that he’s not satisfied with simply being MVP or anything else related to individual accolades. They’ve done this with an Opening Day starter who has basically sent shockwaves across the sport because he can throw a curveball now. These dudes are really good.

Assuming everybody on this team stays healthy enough, this figures to be another fun and exciting season ahead of us. It would be understandable if this lineup took a step back from the otherworldly showcase that they put on for an entire season but at the same time, would it really be shocking if Ronald Acuña Jr. had another 40/40 season? Would it really be all that surprising if Matt Olson continued to hit baseballs over fences at an alarming rate?

Would continued excellence from Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies and, Sean Murphy and Michael Harris II really be that much of a surprise? I suppose it would be asking a lot of Orlando Arcia and Marcell Ozuna to deliver an encore of what they brought to the table in 2023 but that happens and if Jarred Kelenic and Adam Duvall can properly fill the hole in left field then we've really got a stew going. Either way, it wouldn't be a stretch to see this lineup keep right on mashing like they did last season.

Likewise, it really wouldn't be all that surprising if Spencer Strider continued to blossom into being one of the game's dominant starters. Max Fried has been especially effective while healthy so there aren't really too many concerns about his production on the mound. Charlie Morton has defied Father Time for this long, so why should he stop now? Chris Sale had a decent enough season but it's clear that he's got a chip on his shoulder to prove that he can stay healthy and get it done on the mound once again. Reynaldo López should benefit simply from being in a competent and steady organization with low expectations when it comes to carrying this rotation. I don't know about y'all but I've got pretty lofty hopes for this rotation this season.

The same goes for the bullpen as well. Raisel Iglesias has mostly been lights out since the Angels let him come here, A.J. Minter is A.J. Minter, Joe Jiménez, Pierce Johnson and Aaron Bummer should all help make sure that facing the Braves while trailing is a baseball death sentence for most teams and having Tyler Matzek back and healthy should be a big bonus as well. On top of all that, The Benadryl Hat Man himself is back in the fray — Jesse Chavez is back, so you know there's no possible way things can go awry when he's around.

Then there's the manager. Once again, Brian Snitker isn't going to win over many new hearts and minds when it comes to his in-game strategy or lineup construction. It is what it is at this point — just like the fact that he's very likely the best man-manager in baseball at the moment. The next time we hear about any type of clubhouse strife within the team will be the first time. The man runs a steady ship and if things aren't going according to plan in the early stages of the season, don't worry — they will be playing at Arizona right before the All-Star break and for some reason that's been the spot where the team has suddenly gotten right over the past couple of seasons. For real though, the Braves have themselves a fine manager and he's well-equipped to handle the task ahead.

I'm saying all of this to kind of repeat the message that I've tried to relay to our readers every season since it became clear that the Braves were now a serious force in baseball. Just enjoy the ride, y'all. There's going to be hiccups and there will be stretches where this team might play some raggedy-looking baseball but it's also plain to see that there are also going to be longer and more frequent periods where this team looks a juggernaut. It's going to be exciting, it's going to be fun and it's going to be good.

Also, remember how I said that the past two Postseason eliminations are still fresh in everybody's mind? I think it's safe to say that it's even fresher in the minds of the players who experienced that pain. This is a great team that's also going to have a chip on its shoulder to try to finally set the record straight with regards to who is the best team. The Atlanta Braves have played some outstanding baseball over the past two seasons but it's also time for another deep Postseason run — and they know it, too. This team's mentality has served them well and I've still got faith that they're going to figure this thing out. There's too much talent here for it to flame out in embarrassing fashion once again.

That last sentence might come back to haunt me but I'd also love it if it ended up being clairvoyant in the end. The main thing I'm trying to say here is that if you're nervous about the ride coming to an abrupt end in October, that's understandable. We are Braves fans, after all — we saw this happen back in the '90s. However, it's also understandable to still get excited and amped up for this team going forward. Baseball is back, the Braves are good and this season is going to be another good one, y'all.

Ronald Acuña, Jr. stepped out of his own shadow with his recent article in The Players Tribue chronicling his personal journey on-and-off the baseball field.

Last weekend, I made an early morning run to a big-box retailer to pick up a couple of things. As is habit, I walked the back of the aisles, looking for clearance items that are too good of a deal to resist.

Shampoo I’ve never heard of marked down 70-percent? Sure, I’ll take one.

As I made my way through the toy section, I looked to my left and saw a new Ronald Acuña, Jr. Funko Pop. I couldn’t resist picking one up and putting it in my cart.

I’m still a kid, at heart.

I made my way to the self-check-out line. The older lady who works there every day I come in walked over to say hello. She saw the Acuña, Jr. Funko in my cart and said something along these lines:

“Oh, I picked up one of those earlier this week. I was getting a Funko for one of my grandkids and got one for myself. I love Ronnie. He’s my favorite player on the Braves.”

I am horrible at guessing ages. I’ve reached the point where I forget how old I am, so this lady is maybe 70 - if not, she’s somewhere in that general neighborhood.

And she couldn’t stop talking about how much she loves Ronald Acuña, Jr. (Especially - as she noted twice - after Freddie Freeman left.)

Earlier this week, Atlanta’s superstar outfielder - and reigning National League MVP - penned a long-form biographical editorial for The Player’s Tribune.

If you haven’t read it - take 15 minutes and do so.

Acuña, Jr. is 26 years old. He’s accrued 26.8 fWAR in 673 career game with the Braves after debuting at age 20 back in 2018. He’s been an MVP, the NL Rookie of the Year, a four-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger. He’s the first player in MLB history to hit 40 or more home runs and steal 70 or more bases in the same season.

Yet, for much of his time in Atlanta, he’s been a polarizing figure on the field.

After suffering a knee injury mid-way through the 2021 season that caused him to miss the remainder of the season, he returned in 2022 to play in 119 games but didn’t seem to be himself on the field. There were questions as to whether the issues were physical or not.

Then 2023 happened and he answered any-and-all questions as to his health, or so it seemed. During Spring Training this year, he missed some time after “tweaking” his knee. Whispers of concern transformed into sighs of relief when he took the field a later in the Spring.

Before that, though, Acuña, Jr. declared his love for the Braves and his desire to finish his career in Atlanta. Braves fans rejoiced.

Segments of the fanbase, who love to point out any-and-every flaw with players, saw one of their long-standing criticisms of Acuña, Jr. muted when he did multiple interviews in English. One less thing to feed the trolls.

English is a terrible language. I still can’t speak it correctly. I can’t imagine how difficult it is to learn it as a second language.

Since last season, there seemed to be a change in Acuña, Jr. I shudder to say a maturity, because that’s impossible to judge when you aren’t privy to the inner workings of a person or their situation, so maybe a better way to view it was more of an openness.

Then, Acuña, Jr. wrote what he wrote. And if you read what he wrote, you know what he wrote was one helluva testament to the power of the written word.

In the piece, Acuña, Jr. drew back the curtain to his youth - the pressure he put on himself - the angst and then joy of being signed. Then, in a blunt admission of the struggle he had in adjusting to a new country, a new language, and new culture and doing so at 16 years old.

Stop.

What the heck were you doing when you were 16? Did you move to a foreign country, by yourself, to work a job that you loved but were now committed to by living with strangers and eating at one of two places for half-a-year, while having difficulty with any-and-all communication? And did you send what money you made back to your family?

Maybe you have, but I have not.

Years ago, I did work an entry-level, manual-labor factory job with a couple of co-workers who were doing something similar. They weren’t 16, but they were young, and had immigrated to the U.S. from Honduras. They left their families behind - going back only once a year - while sending most of what they earned back to their families so their parents, wives and kids could have a better life. These guys hoped to return home after working in the States for a decade and run a family farm.

Their situation taught me an important lesson in humanity.

In an age where sensationalism and extremism plague all forms of media, there is nothing like direct interactions with those from different backgrounds to provide a much-needed exposure the importance of humanity.

Which brings me back to Acuña, Jr.

The story he shared - his story - was open and honest. He talked about crying because of how much he missed his family. He expressed the regret for actions and mistakes he made on the field early in his career. He was seemingly as soul-baring with his struggles and dreams as any player I can recall.

And not just any player, any person.

I’ve never been a professional athlete. You probably haven’t either. I can’t relate to the challenge and desire and work it takes not only make it to the highest level but to be one of the sport’s biggest stars.

Yet there I was, reading Acuña, Jr.’s article, and relating to many of the emotional gymnastics he has gone through.

What we witnessed last season, on the field, was one of the finest performances in the glorious history of baseball. We saw that from one of our players from our team. We saw it from a guy who should be, just now, hitting his prime years.

We also saw it from a guy we didn’t really know - or maybe we thought we knew but didn’t understand.

Now Acuña, Jr. has flipped that script on its ear. He did so by expressing his humanity.

Hank Aaron. Dale Murphy. Two franchise icons.

Fans of different generations loved both those guys for different reasons, but one of their common ties was their humanity.

Sports stars don’t have to be role models. Many of them don’t want to be. That’s okay - they are professional athletes who entertain us for a living.

But when those super stars are role models, they can have a life-time impact on generations of people.

This isn’t to say that is Acuña, Jr. - or that he wants to be one, either. But credit the Braves for not only having a number of players who seems like they are all as good of people off the field as on it - from Ozzie Albies to Austin Riley to Spencer Strider to Micheal Harris II. But it isn’t just that generation, the same could be said with Charlie Morton and Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward, whose time coming through the Braves system preceded those afore mentioned Braves start who are all under the age of 30.

Of all the current Atlanta Braves stars, it’s hard to argue that any of them are bigger than Acuña, Jr. Unlike some of his current teammates, there seemed to be blemishes in his metaphorical armor. It was full of “but” and “if” and “maybe he should” all based on people not understanding who exactly Ronald Acuña, Jr. was as a person.

But no longer.

Acuña’s gift to all of us was a parable, I suppose, on strength that comes from admitting fault and weakness.

No one is perfect. Mistakes happen. People change.

Acuña, Jr. gave us all a reminder of that this week with his article. It may not have been an intentional lesson on humanity, but it was an effective one.

We are all better for it. Whether we are seven or 70.

The addition of Jesse Chavez sets the Braves’ 26-man roster for Opening Day.

The Atlanta Braves finalized their Opening Day roster with a pair of moves Thursday. The team selected the contract of reliever Jesse Chavez adding him to the 40-man roster. The Braves also placed left-handed reliever Angel Perdomo on the 15-day injured list. Perdomo will miss all of the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Chavez initially signed a minor league deal and went to Spring Training with the Chicago White Sox. He appeared in seven Cactus League games where he allowed 12 hits and nine runs over seven innings of work. He was released last weekend, but wasn’t without a job long signing a minor league deal with Atlanta Monday. The Braves outrighted Jackson Stephens off the 40-man roster to Gwinnett Tuesday which cleared the way for Chavez to join the active roster in time for Opening Day.

Grant McAuley and Kris Willis catch up on all of the latest Atlanta Braves news in advance of Opening Day.

The 2024 season is upon us and the Atlanta Braves get things started where last season ended, opening up with a rematch against the NL East rival Philadelphia Phillies.

Spencer Strider gets the ball on Opening Day, which was shifted from Thursday to Friday thanks to expected inclement weather in the Philadelphia area. You’ll hear Strider’s thoughts on getting the season-opening assignment and doing so against the Phillies.

How will the rest of the rotation line up behind Strider on the first road trip of the year? Is Reynaldo Lopez ready to hold down the fifth starter’s job? Those are among the questions the Braves will look to answer as the 2024 campaign begins.

It was also another week and another old friend alert for the Braves. Jesse Chavez was the latest reunion, signing with the club after being cut loose by the Chicago White Sox. The 40-year-old veteran shared his feelings on returning to the Braves for what looks to be the 17th and final season of his well-traveled career. How does the rest of the Braves bullpen stack up with Chavez on board? That and a look at the reserves who will round out the 26-man roster.

Finally, we heard a special story from Ronald Acuña Jr. this week, penned for The Players’ Tribune. The reigning NL MVP shared his family roots in baseball, his passion for the game, the anguish of missing the World Series in 2021, and so much more. We discussed this candid look behind the curtain for one of the biggest stars in baseball.

Grant McAuley and Kris Willis of Battery Power cover it all as the season begins this week. Be sure to like, share, and subscribe to the channel.
