The Braves didn’t hit a single or a double tonight. They still hit enough to back up Julio Teheran and win another game.

Julio Teheran badly needed a solid rebound start after his last appearance on the mound went awry. He got just that, and he got a lot of offensive help from the rest of his teammates as the Braves picked up a calm and business-like victory over the Marlins, 5-0.

The first inning of this game came and went without much of anything going on, and the top of the second continued that trend as Julio Teheran was on the path towards yet another great start against the Marlins this season. The bottom of the second brought offensive action from two of the most unlikely sources. First, a leadoff walk from Josh Donaldson was cashed in thanks to a triple (!) from Tyler Flowers (!!!). Shockingly, it was his third triple of the season and the Braves entered the lead. Immediately after that, Adeiny Hechavarria launched a rocket that was almost as impressive as his bat flip following the dinger.

The explosion of offense from the hitters with the highest odds against them to do so put the Braves ahead by three and that ended up being more than enough for Julio Teheran. He will end the season with 32 innings thrown against the Marlins with only a single run allowed. Marlins or not, that is impressive against any team that is playing in the majors and this was also just what Julio needed to bounce back from an extremely rough start during his last time out. Going seven innings and giving up zero runs and striking out nine batters is definitely a positive performance and his efforts were paramount in making tonight a very easy night for the Braves.

Ronald Acuña Jr. reached base in the third inning with a walk and I’m sure that everybody in the stadium knew that he going to take his chance to enter the 30/30 Club. The Marlins knew it as well, as they pretty easily sniffed out his stolen base attempt in the third inning. Unfortunately for Miami, Acuña was not done doing damage to them. He came back to the plate in the fifth inning with the game still 3-0 and a runner on first. By the end of his at-bat, the game was 5-0 after Acuña had once again sent a ball over the fence against the Marlins.

Interestingly enough, Julio Teheran and the rest of the Braves’ pitching staff were unable to put together a 1-2-3 inning against Miami — yet, they were able to keep the Marlins off the scoreboard. Part of that was due to the defense being on point, and Ozzie Albies had himself a whale of an inning in the bottom of the eighth.

On the other hand, you have already read about every single hit that the Braves had tonight. It just turned out that the Braves made their hits count in a big way. A triple and two home runs ended up being enough for the Braves to pick up a very comfortable victory against the Marlins.

The Braves didn’t gain any ground on the Nationals as they got their act together and beat a badly-slumping Pirates team, but they did take another day off of the calendar. Watching the calendar is almost as important as watching the scoreboard at this point of the season and as far as tonight goes, both factors were in favor of your Atlanta Braves.

The Braves have a chance to win all three home series on their nine-game home stand.

Welcome to the game thread, and the story is the same as last night. The Braves need to take care of business in situations like this against the Marlins, and they’ve gotten off to a pretty good start with a comfortable victory last night. Let’s hope that the Braves keep it going and also get out of tonight’s game with no more injuries.

Here comes the cavalry!

David O’Brien of The Athletic has a slew of positive injury updates that could not have come at a better time following Brian McCann going to the IL earlier today. Dansby Swanson, Austin Riley, and Darren O’Day will begin their rehab assignments on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, respectively. While no exact time frame has been given about their expected returns to Atlanta, it seems Swanson and Riley could be back before September, and O’Day sometime during September.

The biggest development here is obviously Swanson. Over the past few days, it has been reported that he was ramping up on-field activities in his return from a heel injury. Of these three, he should have the biggest immediate impact. Both his glove and his bat will upgrade Atlanta’s offense and defense significantly, which will be a welcome development before a 14-game stretch versus the Phillies and Nationals starting September 5th.

Austin Riley’s quick recovery is a wonderful turn of events. Initial reports seemed to indicate that Riley could be done for the year with a partial ligament tear, but further opinions brought better news. While Riley’s production had certainly decreased before his injury, it is hard to argue any outfielder not named Ronald Acuna Jr. offers more offensive potential than Riley. Hopefully, Riley will be able to get enough at-bats to find his groove again going into the postseason. The bats of Swanson and Riley being available in early September should inject a big boost of confidence into both the players and the fans that Atlanta will secure the division crown.

Finally, the legend of Darren O’Day’s ghost is a myth no more. He is alive, functioning, and apparently at a better level than he has previously in his time as a Brave. O’Day will begin in the Gulf Coast League and likely will need a few weeks before being available to return to the majors. It will be interesting to see how O’Day emerges as a candidate for a postseason bullpen spot. If he is anything close to his pre-injury form, he could make it very hard to leave him off the roster.

As mentioned with O’Day, since all three players are in the Braves organization before September 1st, they all will be eligible for the postseason. Each of these players has shown the ability to be a difference maker. The addition of these three could significantly raise the overall level of play for the Braves. After enduring a tough month of August due to injuries, that would be a very welcome development to help Atlanta achieve its lofty goals for 2019.

As usual during this current run-in with the injury bug, most of the changes you’re going to be are going to come between spots 5-through-9.
1-3 for the Marlins is exactly the same as what it was last night. There are a couple of changes so while it is a “different” lineup, there’s still plenty of familiar faces here.
The first-rate defender is back with the first-place club

The Atlanta Braves have made a roster move before tonight’s game against the Miami Marlins.
McCann was removed last night from the game for left knee soreness. Jackson will replace him as the backup catcher. This will be Alex’s second MLB stint as he was summoned from Gwinnett in April. He replaced McCann as the backup catcher then as well. Alex played in three MLB games then, only mustering one walk and no hits in eleven plate appearances. However, he looked very comfortable behind the plate in those outings. In Gwinnett, Jackson has a slash line of .224/.311/.510 with 103 wRC+ and 25 home runs.

For the Braves, this is yet another position player lost to injury. Since the All-Star break, Nick Markakis, Ender Inciarte, Austin Riley, and Dansby Swanson have been felled. The Braves aren’t at our-pet’s-heads-have-fallen-off level yet, but we are getting there.

It’s been tough sailing for the Braves as of late when it comes to injuries. Hopefully the worst is behind them and they can keep on winning.

After picking up another win against the Marlins, the Braves are right back at it again tonight in the second game of this series that will end what’s been a successful stint at home so far.

The main concern will be the injuries, as it just seems like guys are dropping left and right. Last night, Brian McCann left the game due to “left knee soreness.” While it was described as being done for precautionary reasons, Mark Bowman has been reporting that the Braves aren’t even going to take any chances and that McCann is probably going to do a stint on the 10-day IL and Alex Jackson will likely be called up.

Additionally, it was clear that new addition Adeiny Hechavarria was experiencing some sort of pain after he made the spectacular defensive play to end last night’s game. While there hasn’t been any word on his status, I think that we’d all be extremely grateful for it to just be a scare instead of something serious. This team’s injury luck has completely turned 180 degrees as of late, so a clean bill of health for Hechavarria would be a true blessing.

In healthy Braves news, Freddie Freeman busted out of a big slump last night in a major way. After spending the Dodgers series in the doldrums, he welcomed Miami back to SunTrust Park with two homers and four RBIs. This offense always hums along when Freddie is mashing, so it would be huge to see him keep that up for the rest of this series and beyond.

The Braves as a whole will not only be looking to pick up where they left off last night against Miami, they’ll be looking to pick up where they left off against Caleb Smith. Their offensive bright spot during that stressful four-game series in Miami earlier this month came against Smith, and that was when they tagged Smith for six runs over 4.2 innings. In fact, the Braves haven’t had much trouble against Smith this season — they’ve scored 11 runs with him on the mound over the 16.2 innings that he’s thrown against them this season. Even though the Braves are a bit shorthanded, it would still be a bit of a disappointment if they couldn’t have some sort of breakthrough against Caleb Smith tonight.

Speaking of a breakthrough, Julio Teheran is in desperate need of one after his last start. It was an absolutely calamitous night for the franchise veteran of the rotation, as he had what was easily his worst start of the season. There’s nowhere to go but up after what the Mets did to him during his last time out, and the good news for Julio is that he’s had a very good track record against the Marlins this season. Do you remember the start Julio made before his awful outing against New York? He threw seven innings and only gave up one run against Miami. That one run is the only run that Miami has scored against Julio Teheran so far this season over 25 innings. If Julio is going to bounce back, tonight seems like a prime opportunity for him to do so.

On paper, this seems like this should be a slam dunk for the Braves. The pitching matchup is in their favor and when it comes to the matchups overall, the Braves are the Braves and the Marlins are the Marlins. Hopefully the Braves can take care of business and pick up another win and also get out of this game with nobody else taking a trip to the Injured List. Prosperity and health are two things that everybody should strive for and the Braves are definitely looking to regain the latter part.
