Freeman homered for the second straight game.

Freddie Freeman homered for the second straight game while Huascar Ynoa turned in another strong performance on the mound to help the Atlanta Braves to a 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The game got off to a fast start as Andrew McCutchen greeted Huascar Ynoa rudely homering on the first pitch of the game to stake the Phillies to an early lead. This time, the Braves didn’t wait long to answer back. Ronald Acuña Jr. returned to the lineup after a scary hit by pitch in Saturday’s game. He worked a lead off walk from Aaron Nola and then swiped second base. Freddie Freeman followed with a single to center that scored Acuña to tie the game.

After a Marcell Ozuna groundout, Ozzie Albies gave the Braves the lead with a triple to center that scored Freeman to make it 2-1.

The Braves tacked on another run in the third as Freddie Freeman connected on his ninth home run of the season to extend the lead to 5-1.

Nola would exit after four having allowed five hits and five runs. He struck out four and walked one while allowing a pair of homers. He threw just 58 pitches which was the fewest he has ever thrown in a major league start.

Ynoa has been one of the season’s biggest surprises for the Braves and Sunday’s game was more of the same. He held the Phillies in check after McCutchen’s homer allowing just four hits and that single run over six innings. He struck out six and walked just one.

Tyler Matzek allowed a lead off single in the seventh but then flagged down a come backer off the bat of Odubel Herrera over his shoulder to start a nifty double play. He then struck out Scott Kingery to end the inning.

A.J. Minter sat the Phillies down in order in the eighth and Atlanta tacked on another run in the bottom half of the frame as Riley doubled home Albies to push the lead to 6-1. Luke Jackson closed things out in the ninth to seal the win.

Freeman led the way for the Braves with three hits and a walk. Swanson and Riley finished with two hits each. Atlanta was 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left just two men on base.

With the win, the Braves take the series and climb back to the .500 mark for the season at 17-17. They will enjoy an off day on Monday before continuing their homestand on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Can’t keep the kid out of action for long, apparently

The Atlanta Braves pulled off an unlikely win Saturday night and will try to make it two straight Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Ronald Acuña Jr. is back after his scary plunking yesterday. Otherwise, things are about as you’d expect.

The Phillies apparently like Segura’s work since returning from injury for this series enough to keep him second and drop Rhys Hoskins all the way down to seventh. The Phillies have hit nine different batters seventh this year already; Hoskins will be the tenth after not batting anywhere but second or third so far this season. Weirdly, Hoskins has never hit below fourth anywhere in his career when penciled into the starting lineup, this will literally be his first game hitting anywhere below the top four spots when the game starts.

The Braves seem to know that they need to upgrade their bullpen and are looking at a familiar face.

While most expected the Braves’ bullpen to take a step back this year (it was always basically impossible to replicate what the 2020 squad did), it has still be jarring to see how rough things have been. Instead of one of the best units in the league which is where the Braves were last year, the relief corps has been in the middle of the pack during 2021 and has been substantially worse outside of the work that AJ Minter and Will Smith have done.

The team has tried to shuffle pieces around and should have Chris Martin back from injury soon, but there is only so much that Nate Jones-level roster moves can do to move the needle. It looks like that the team has now turned its sights to a familiar face.

First, it is worth mentioning that it was actually Talkin’ Jake from Jomboy that had a Greene/Braves reunion in the works, but that doesn’t change the fact that the negotiations between the two sides are being widely reported on now. That wouldn’t be the case if things weren’t close to being done.

It will be interesting to see what terms Greene agrees to as it was reported that he was wanting big time reliever money, but things change when a month of the season passes and both the player is unemployed AND the team has a real need.

After posting a 4.01 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 24.2 innings with the Braves in 2019 after the team acquired him at the trade deadline, Greene put up a 2.60 ERA and 3.81 FIP with 21 strikeouts in 27.2 innings during the 2020 season before testing out free agency.

Huascar Ynoa looks to keep the magic going Sunday.

Coming off of a big come-from-behind win on Saturday, the Atlanta Braves will try to secure a series win over the Philadelphia Phillies on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Pablo Sandoval delivered a two-out, two strike pinch-hit home run in the ninth to send Saturday’s game to extra innings. Then after falling behind 7-4 in the 12th, William Contreras tied the game with a bases loaded double. Ehire Adrianza walked it off two batters later with an opposite field single.

Huascar Ynoa has been one of the biggest surprises of the season for the Braves. He allowed four hits and one unearned run over seven innings last time out against the Nationals. He has a 2.36 ERA in 34 1/3 innings this season while holding opponents to a .187 average against. He has struck out 38 and walked just eight.

The Phillies will counter with their ace Aaron Nola who is also off to a great start in 2021. Nola allowed one run, five hits and struck out 10 over six innings in his last start against the Brewers. He has a 2.89 ERA and has wracked up 49 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings so far this season.

Ronald Acuña Jr. left Saturday’s game after he was hit in the hand with a pitch from Sam Coonrod in the seventh inning. X-Rays came back negative and he is considered day-to-day. Freddie Freeman homered in Saturday’s win snapping an 0-for-22 stretch.

First pitch from Truist Park Sunday is scheduled for 7:08 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN.
