Wright allowed five runs in just two innings.

Kyle Wright struggled early and the Atlanta Braves squandered some opportunities late in a 7-3 loss to the New York Mets Wednesday night.

Wright’s return to the rotation did not go well as he again struggled to locate his pitches. Jeff McNeil flew out to begin the game but then Francisco Lindor worked a walk and then advanced to third on a double by Michael Conforto. Wright jumped ahead of Pete Alonso 0-2 but was unable to put him away. His 1-2 pitch bounced past William Contreras allowing Lindor to come home with the Mets’ first run. Alonso walked before Dominic Smith grounded to Albies at second, Conforto scored on the play to make it 2-0.

Wright again found himself in trouble in the second when Luis Guillorme hit a one out double. Wright struck out pitcher Tylor Megill for the second out but McNeil followed with a single that scored Guillorme to extend the lead to 3-0. Lindor followed with a two-run shot to right to push the lead to 5-0.

It certainly wasn’t the start that Wright was looking for and you have to wonder where he goes from here. He would exit after just two innings having allowed four hits, three walks and five runs. Wright threw 55 pitches with just 29 going for strikes.

Josh Tomlin held the Mets scoreless in the third and the fourth and the Braves finally got on the board in the fifth. Ehire Adrianza walked to begin the inning and then moved to second on a ground out by Contreras. Ender Inciarte then connected for his second home run of the season to put Atlanta on the board 5-2.

Megill then walked Tomlin and was replaced by righty Miguel Castro. Dansby Swanson just missed a home run to left and then hit a bullet to Guillorme at third that he turned into a fielder’s choice. Swanson stole second and then moved over to third on an infield single by Freddie Freeman. Castro then walked Ozzie Albies to load the bases but Abraham Almonte grounded out to squander the opportunity.

Atlanta crept closer in the sixth as Austin Riley greeted Corey Oswalt with a lead off double. Adrianza followed with a single back to center that scored Riley to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Tyler Matzek worked a scoreless sixth but allowed a leadoff single to Conforto in the seventh before giving way to Chris Martin. Martin was seeing his first action since June 15 and was greeted by Alonso who singled sharply to center. Martin struck out Smith for the first out but then gave up a run-scoring single to James McCann that pushed the lead back to 6-3. Martin got out of it with no further damage as Kevin Pillar grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.

The Braves threatened again in the eighth but came away empty handed. Oswalt struck out Almonte but then gave up another double to Riley. After a walk to Adrianza, Luis Rojas would summon Edwin Diaz from the bullpen to try and record a multi-inning save. Pablo Sandoval pinch hit for Contreras and was called out on strikes but replay showed that he did not swing. Inciarte flew out to left to end the inning.

Shane Greene took over on the mound in the ninth and his struggles continued. Guillorme worked a leadoff walk. Greene struck out Billy McKinney for the first out but then allowed back-to-back singles to McNeil and Lindor. Guillorme scored on the play to extend the lead to 7-3. Greene recovered to strike out Conforto and then got Alonso to pop out to end the inning.

Diaz stayed in to work the ninth and made quick work of Kevan Smith and Swanson before walking Freeman. However, Albies lined out to Alonso to end the game.

With the loss, Atlanta falls to 35-38 on the season and are back where they started, five games back of the NL East lead. They will now head to Cincinnati where they will begin a four-game series against the Reds Thursday.

The injury bug continues to bite the Atlanta Braves. Ronald Acuña Jr. was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup due to lower back tightness. Ehire Adrianza will now start in right field while Dansby Swanson moves into the lead off spot.

Brian Snitker said that Acuña came in with some back soreness Wednesday. He will receive treatment and is considered day-to-day. Snitker added that outfielder Guillermo Heredia’s wrist is still sore but he will be available off the bench Wednesday night.

Obviously the Braves can’t afford to be without Acuña for any length of time so hopefully this isn’t something that is serious and he is ready to go Thursday in Cincinnati. Atlanta will play tonight’s game with two true outfielders and an infielder in their outfield to start. That is a perfect example of just how hard their outfield depth has been hit this season.

The Braves began play Wednesday four games back of the Mets for the NL East division lead.

Acuña was scratched due to lower back stiffness.

The Atlanta Braves will try to make it three straight wins Wednesday night when they wrap up a four-game series against the New York Mets. Kyle Wright will step into the rotation in place of the injured Max Fried on Wednesday. New York will counter with rookie right-hander Tylor Megill who will be making his major league debut.

Brian Snitker will stick with the same lineup for Wednesday’s series finale. Ender Inciarte will make his second straight start in center field and will hit eighth. Inciarte replaced Guillermo Heredia in the lineup Tuesday after Heredia was scratched late due to a wrist inflammation.

The Braves are looking to keep the pressure on the Mets in the NL East race.

Even after everything that has gone wrong this season, the Atlanta Braves are still in the thick of things in the NL East. The Braves closed to four games of the division lead with a 3-0 win over the New York Mets Tuesday night. They will have an opportunity to cut into that lead more when they wrap up a four game series at Citi Field Wednesday night.

Before Charlie Morton turned in a dazzling performance Tuesday night, Atlanta’s pitching staff took another hit when it was announced that Max Fried was headed to the injured list with a blister on his left index finger. Brian Snitker called the move “precautionary” before Tuesday game and the hope is that Fried will be ready to go when he is eligible to return from the injured list.

That means Wednesday’s start will go to Kyle Wright who will be making his second start of the season at the Major League level. Wright got the start at Wrigley Field back on April 16 where he allowed three hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings. He also walked two and hit four batters in a rather forgettable performance.

Wright has made eight starts for Gwinnett with varying degrees of success. The overall numbers (3.76 ERA, 4.14 FIP) are good enough but the command is still lacking as his four walks per nine suggests. So to summarize, not much has changed with Wright in 2021. He has the skill to be an effective Major League starter but the Braves are still waiting for him to put it all together.

Atlanta isn’t going to get any sympathy from the Mets in regards to their pitching woes. New York saw starter Marcus Stroman exit Tuesday’s game during the second inning with a hip injury. That came on the heels of the news that starter Joey Lucchesi needs Tommy John surgery while relievers Robert Gsellman and Jerry’s Familia were also placed on the injured list.

Which leads to Wednesday where 6’7” right-hander Tylor Megill will make his Major League debut. Megill began the season in Double-A where he struck out just under 15 batters per nine across five starts. He has made three starts at Triple-A and is still averaging better than a strikeout an inning while posting a 3.77 ERA and a 4.08 FIP in 14 1/3 innings. Megill is the Mets’ No. 25 prospect according to FanGraphs.

Guillermo Heredia was a late scratch from Tuesday’s lineup due to wrist inflammation. It didn’t sound like the team thinks it is too serious but he will probably be out of the lineup for a couple of days.

Coverage Wednesday is scheduled to get underway at 7:10 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports South.
