They’ll try it again tomorrow!

Tonight would’ve been the first game between the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres since the 2019 season. As it turns out, we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see it happen since the weather in the Atlanta metro area didn’t agree with baseball happening. As a result of inclement weather, tonight’s game has been postponed and a doubleheader has been scheduled.

Interestingly enough, the doubleheader has been scheduled for Wednesday instead of Tuesday. It’ll be played as part of a day-night doubleheader, with the original 12:20 PM first pitch time serving as game one and a 5:20 PM start serving as game two. I’m guessing that Wednesday got marked as a doubleheader since we might be in this same position tomorrow night. As of right now, the forecast for tomorrow in the Atlanta metro area is looking stormy as well, so there’s a decent chance that rain may play a factor in tomorrow’s game. Of course, weather is always subject to change so you might want to keep an eye on the weather forecast for the time being.

If everything goes off without a hitch, Kyle Muller should still be the scheduled starter for tomorrow’s game. Game one on Wednesday will be started by Touki Toussaint (who will be making his first major league start of 2021) and Game two will see Charlie Morton take the mound to get things going for Atlanta. Again, here’s hoping that the weather cooperates on Tuesday so that we can get a full series in. But for now, it’s time to just enjoy baseball as a neutral observer of the other games on MLB’s Monday slate.

The gauntlet continues.

The Braves are back in action and they’re welcoming in the San Diego Padres for the first of three games at Truist Park between these two teams. Will the Braves put together nine innings of good, solid baseball? Will the Padres continue slugging at an extremely high level after their trip to Washington? Will Atlanta’s bullpen have another calamity? It’s all up in the air, folks!

Abraham Almonte is back in the lineup at left field and batting seventh. Other than the pitcher, he’s the only new face in the lineup when compared to the lineup that the Braves put out for their series finale on Sunday. Stephen Vogt remains in the lineup after making his Braves debut yesterday. Still “interesting” that Dansby Swanson is batting second but hey, we’re not the ones making decisions around here!

Meanwhile, here’s the look for the Padres:

Wil Myers is entering the lineup today after spending Sunday’s game in Washington on the bench. They have also switched things up with Tommy Pham serving as the leadoff hitter. Other than that, the heart of the order is similar to what San Diego had going yesterday. Hopefully they’ve cooled off a bit as they get off the plane!

Kyle Muller is back in the big leagues and this time, he’ll be taking on his biggest test yet in the form of the Padres

After the Braves took one out of three games against the Rays, the post-All Star break gauntlet for Atlanta continues on as the Padres come into town for a three-game series of their own.

This is a matchup of two third-place teams in their respective divisions, and the Braves are actually closer to their division leaders (four games back heading into today) than the Padres are (five games back), but that’s a tale of two divisions. The Mets are struggling to stay afloat, while the Giants continue to impress by flying high atop the NL West. San Diego currently has a firm grip on the second Wild Card spot, while the Braves are basically focusing on the division at the moment.

Judging by how both teams can swing the bat, I wouldn’t be shocked at all if we saw plenty of runs put on the board by either side. The Padres are rolling into this series with a team wRC+ of 104 and a .166 Isolated Power number. This is after they spent the weekend in Washington scoring 24 (!!!), 10, and 7 runs in each of the three games, so to say that they’re swinging the bat with confidence at the moment is an understatement. Still, the Braves have been known to break out and have big nights at the plate, themselves — they’re coming into this game with a 101 wRC+ as a team and a .188 ISO. So while this isn’t a guarantee that the Braves and Padres are going to be slugging it out tonight, it’s a reminder that it wouldn’t be surprising if that’s what happened.

It’ll also be interesting to see how Yu Darvish fares as the starter for the Padres this evening. He’s been on the IL due to a hip injury, but he’s done his ten days on the Injured List and is set to return. Something must’ve been wrong with him during his most recent start on July 8, which is when he gave up six runs in just three innings against the Nationals at Petco Park. Even before that start, he gave up four runs in six innings against the Phillies, so Darvish has been on a pretty rough run since the calendar moved into July. Additionally, the Braves had some success against Darvish when they last saw him in 2019. Granted, only four guys (Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, Dansby Swanson, and Austin Riley) from that game in 2019 are going to be playing in tonight’s game, but there are still enough guys in the lineup who are familiar with Darvish and shouldn’t be too befuddled about what the 34-year-old hurler has to offer.

Meanwhile, Kyle Muller’s elevator journey between the big leagues and Triple-A continues on, as he’s been called up to make the start for the Braves tonight. The last time we saw him, he made it two outs into the sixth inning before leaving the game against the Marlins and that was after he tossed five shutout innings against the Reds (in Cincinnati, mind you) in his previous start. Whenever Muller has come up for a start, he’s usually given the Braves something to work with. Tonight will be a huge test for him as he’ll be taking on a really good Padres lineup, but I think we can all have faith in Muller rising to the occasion in this one.

While the Braves may be entering this series on a note of frustration after dropping what was a very winnable series against the Rays, they now have a chance to wipe out those memories by picking up a win tonight against a really good Padres team. There’s going to be a lot of intrigue surrounding Yu Darvish’s return from a quick IL stint and as always, seeing Kyle Muller on the mound for the Braves is always exciting. Tonight should be a good game, and hopefully it ends on a positive note for our Braves!

Muller will start Monday’s series opener against the Padres.

The Atlanta Braves announced several roster moves this morning in advance of Monday’s series opener against the San Diego Padres.
Muller was sent down right before the All-Star break where he could remain on turn with Gwinnett. He will start Monday’s game and has been impressive in three starts allowing a total of five hits and four runs in 14 2/3 innings to go along with 19 strikeouts during that span.

Newcomb has appeared in 23 games with the Braves this season and hasn’t seen much success. He was demoted in late June as his command struggles have persisted. While he has racked up 29 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings this season he has allowed 18 hits, 14 runs and walked 19. In four appearances at Gwinnett since his demotion, Newcomb has allowed four hits and two runs but has just one walk and nine strikeouts in four innings. With A.J. Minter demoted, Newcomb figuring things out would be a shot in the arm for the Braves.

No word on Inciarte’s ailment which could mean that it is COVID related. Inciarte hasn’t played since making a pinch-hitting appearance on July 10 against the Marlins. He is hitting .215/.276/.316 in 79 at-bats this season.

Touki Toussaint will make his season debut Tuesday.

After a frustrating series loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Atlanta Braves will continue their homestand Monday when they begin a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. The series will continue a critical stretch for the Braves in the lead up to the Trade Deadline. Atlanta is currently 45-47 and four games back of the New York Mets in the NL East standings. The Phillies have waltzed up the division standings as well, and the Braves are now looking up at two teams, rather than just the Mets.

After losing Ronald Acuña Jr. for the season with a torn ACL, the Braves acquired outfielder Joc Pederson from the Cubs in exchange for first base prospect Bryce Ball. When talking about that move, President of Baseball Operations Alex Anthopoulos declared that the focus was to add to the roster, at least for now. The team traded for catcher Stephen Vogt two days later and the newcomers helped spark the offense with 22 runs in their series against Tampa Bay.

Pederson slotted into the leadoff spot and went 2-for-4 with a double in Sunday’s loss. Vogt made his Braves debut Sunday and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. The duo is 7-for-14 with a homer since joining Atlanta.

Unfortunately, Atlanta lost two of three in the series despite holding late leads in all three games. A.J. Minter and Luke Jackson combined to allow four runs in the seventh on Sunday in a 7-5 loss. Minter allowed a run in 2/3 of an inning Friday and then Chris Martin was tagged for four hits and two runs in the eighth in a game that the Braves would go on to lose 7-6 in 10 innings.

Atlanta has held a lead in 22 of its 47 losses this season, which is the fourth most in the National League behind the Cubs, Phillies and Rockies. Atlanta is 40-10 when leading after six innings this season. Those 10 losses are tied with Arizona for the most in baseball. For context, the Braves were 27-0 when leading after six innings in 2020 and were 165-14 from 2018-20, which was the best mark in the National League.

It is something that the Braves need to find a solution for, but there are no easy answers. They will get a huge test against a Padres team that is 55-41 and is in third place in the powerhouse NL West. San Diego is second in the National League in runs scored and third in wRC+. The Padres took two of three in Washington but suffered a walk-off loss on Sunday.

San Diego’s bullpen has been solid for most of the season, but their starters have struggled of late due to injury and some underperformance. They will likely be among the teams looking for starting pitching at the trade deadline.

Monday, July 19, 7:20 p.m. ET (Bally Sports South)

Yu Darvish (18 GS, 105.0 IP, 29.8 K%, 5.7 BB%, 3.09 ERA, 3.29 FIP, 3.77 xFIP, 78 ERA-)

The Padres are expected to activate Yu Darvish from the injured list Monday to start in the series opener. Darvish was placed on the injured list on July 11 due to hip inflammation just three days after the Nationals tagged him for eight hits and six runs in just three innings. He has allowed 14 hits and 10 runs in his last nine innings spanning two July starts. Darvish has faced the Braves four times and hasn’t had much luck allowing 22 hits and 13 runs in 17 2/3 innings in his career against Atlanta.

TBD

The Braves haven’t announced who will start Monday’s game but it will likely be Kyle Muller or Bryse Wilson. Both last pitched at Gwinnett on July 14 and would be on regular rest. Muller started that game and allowed one hit, two walks and struck out four over four scoreless innings. Wilson took over from there and allowed five hits and one run over the final five innings. Muller seems to be the favorite given his performance before the All-Star break where he has a 2.45 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.

Tuesday, July 20, 7:20 p.m. ET (Bally Sports South)

TBD

The Padres have yet to announce their pitching plans for Tuesday’s game. Rookie Rheiss Knehr, who started a game for San Diego in their final series before the All-Star Break, would be on regular rest for this game, though he’d need to be called up from the minors again and struggled in his MLB debut, walking four and lasting just 3 2/3 innings.

Touki Toussaint (Triple-A: 4 GS, 16.2 IP, 35.2 K%, 15.5 BB%, 4.32 ERA, 3.66 FIP, 3.32 xFIP)

Touki Toussaint will make his 2021 debut in Tuesday’s game. Toussaint was placed on the 60-day injured list at the end of Spring Training with a shoulder injury. He recently completed a rehab assignment with four starts at Gwinnett where he showed some promise despite persistent control issues as his 15.5 percent walk rate evinces. Toussaint hasn’t had a lot of success at the Major League level but has a chance here to stick in the rotation with Ian Anderson out with a shoulder injury.

Wednesday, July 21, 12:20 p.m. ET (Bally Sports South)

TBD

San Diego hasn’t announced their starter for this game either but Chris Paddack started Friday and would be in line to make this start on normal rest.

Charlie Morton (19 GS, 105.0 IP, 27.7 K%, 8.2 BB%, 3.69 ERA, 3.49 FIP, 3.45 xFIP, 89 ERA-)

Morton will make his second post All-Star break start in Wednesday’s series finale. Morton allowed six hits and three runs over six innings against the Rays. He struck out eight and walked three and left the game with the lead but the bullpen was unable to hold it. Morton has been Atlanta’s best starter this season and they will need another good outing Wednesday.
