Jackson said that given a chance, he’d do the same thing again.

The Atlanta Braves have shown in the NLCS that there is no quit in their game. Their resolve will be put to the test following a painful 6-5 loss in Game 3. Atlanta was five outs away from taking a 3-0 lead in the series, but Cody Bellinger hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning off of Luke Jackson that erased a 5-2 lead and tied the game. Mookie Betts doubled home Chris Taylor two batters later to give the Dodgers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

“Sad thing is I would do the same thing again,” Jackson said when asked about the 1-2 fastball to Bellinger. “I was trying to throw a fastball up and away. I actually threw it better than I thought I threw it,” Jackson added. “Out of my hand, I was like, Oh, that’s a ball. It’s too high. And no it wasn’t too high. It was, you know. A good player, put a good swing on it and pretty remarkable.”

Jackson missed with a slider to begin the at-bat. He came right back with another that Bellinger swung through. He then blew a 97 mph fastball by him for strike two. Perhaps a down and in slider would have been a better choice but you can see what Jackson was trying to do. The 96 mph fastball was up and out of the strike zone but Bellinger was able to get the barrel to it.

“Yeah, he probably wanted to, if he was going up, go up a little higher. It happens,” Brian Snitker said of the pitch.

With Game 4 coming up Wednesday, the Braves won’t have long to dwell on the loss and will need to put it behind them quickly. Jackson thinks their past postseason experiences will help them do that.

“I think my first years when I was here we were kind of young in the playoffs,” Jackson said. “I think when I got over here we had a hundred-loss season almost and going to the playoffs feeling overmatched, going to the playoffs again feeling, rough one against St. Louis, and then get more last year, all the way to Game 7 here. Now being here again, I think everyone’s got a little comfortability and knows that we can compete and we’re a great team and we got a great bond together in the clubhouse and I think that pulls real hard.”

As a reliever who is often in high leverage spots, it is important that Jackson have a short memory. The moment wasn’t lost on him, but all they can do now is regroup and try to find a way to get another win.

“It hurts. We lost the game because I made a couple bad pitches that, you know, some days are outs and some days they’re home runs,” Jackson said. “This is just, you know, a speed bump in the road and I wish it didn’t happen and I wish we were up 3-0 going into Game 4 and having a chance to sweep, but I have no doubt at all in just our team coming back and just stronger tomorrow and ready to recollect and roll.

The Braves will go with a bullpen game for Game 4 but haven’t yet announced a starter.

The Atlanta Braves overcame plenty of adversity this season so it is unlikely that Tuesday’s Game 3 result will have too much of an affect on their mindset for the rest of the series. Still, it is hard to come away from Tuesday’s 6-5 loss without feeling like it was a giant missed opportunity.

There were plenty of ups and downs starting with Charlie Morton who came close to not making it out of the first inning. Morton walked Mookie Betts to lead off the game and then surrendered a two-run home run to Corey Seager. He then walked the bases loaded but was able to get Chris Taylor to pop out to end the inning and minimize the damage.

“I thought it was outstanding the fact that what he went through in the first inning to get through five innings,” Brian Snitker said of Morton’s outing. “That was huge for us. He kind of seemed to, I don’t know, kind of got a second wind, so to speak, and then threw the ball extremely well.”

“It was a rough first inning and he was probably a hit or two away from not even getting through that and then to give us five I thought was outstanding.”

Morton needed 34 pitches to navigate the first inning. He allowed three hits and a career-high six walks but struck out five and didn’t allow any more runs after the first inning. He threw 96 pitches with 55 going for strikes.

“I think it was just my changeup and my cutter was there,” Morton said of his outing. “I think my curveball was fine. Aside from the home run, I think I threw some pretty good breaking balls. It was just that four-seamer just wasn’t, the command wasn’t there early, but fortunately the other pitches were. They were there enough. I think it was just kind of like trying to figure some things out to get more on line and then at least throw pitches in the zone and challenge some guys.”

With a bullpen game on tap for Game 4, an early exit could have been devastating for Atlanta. The end result wasn’t what they wanted, but an early exit by Morton would have likely caused serious issues for Game 4.

Brian Snitker confirmed that the Braves will go with a bullpen game for Game 4 but did not announce who would start.

“No, not yet. We’ll talk about that when I leave here probably,” Snitker answered when asked about his Game 4 starter.

Atlanta had to lean on its bullpen heavily in Game 2 after Ian Anderson’s early exit. They had an off day Monday but had to use four more relievers in Game 3. Tyler Matzek and Luke Jackson have appeared in all seven games this postseason.

“These guys are all going to be tired,” Snitker said of his bullpen. “When the season’s going to be over these guys are going to be hanging. There’s no doubt about it. They got all winter to rest, and I think they’re all going to be fine. There might be a couple guys we want to stay away from, I don’t know. But we got to do what we got to do right now.”

As far as who might start, Huascar Ynoa hasn’t pitched in the NLCS and Drew Smyly has yet to pitch in the postseason. Neither Chris Martin or Jacob Webb pitched in Game 3 and would be available. A.J. Minter tossed a scoreless inning in Game 3 and could be an option as well. Jesse Chavez retired two batters and allowed the go-ahead run to score on Betts’ double in Game 3, but he was warming up multiple times throughout the game.

“We’ll look at the game today and the guys we used and then pair that up with guys we haven’t used,” Snitker added. “We have good options. We have some really good options to start the game for a couple innings or something, and then a lot of guys that are good to go, that are ready to pitch tomorrow. So we’re just going to figure out how we’re going to line it up.”

As painful as the Game 3 loss was, Snitker doesn’t think that his team will have any trouble bouncing back.

“No, they will be fine. They will come out. They will be ready to play,” Snitker said. “They’re going to prepare as always. We have lost tough games before and bounced back and done really good things. So this is just one of them games that it’s like it’s, you got to get 27 outs, man. And like I said earlier, you got to make pitches and plays and the whole thing and it just didn’t happen today.

“We feel good. We’re confident. Every year our guys are getting more and more battle-tested and we played a really good game out there today,” Snitker added. “A lot of really good things happened and we didn’t get one pitch back. I think the guys have a lot of confidence in themselves and they will get a good night’s sleep and have a nice dinner and be ready to go tomorrow and there’s going to be no residual effects after this game here, like there never has been with this group.”

The Atlanta Braves were six outs away from a 3-0 lead in the National League Championship Series, and the team held a 5-2 lead with one of its best relievers on the mound. From there, things crumbled for Atlanta on Tuesday evening, and the result was a 6-5 loss that sent Braves Country to bed in unhappy fashion.

TC’s Brad Rowland and Eric Cole host Episode 317 of the Talking Chop Podcast to break it all down, and topics include the following:

The first inning was truly a roller coaster ride, from a missed opportunity for Atlanta to a two-run home run by the Dodgers and a minor miracle to get out of the inning trailing by only two runs

Atlanta had a big inning in the fourth, chasing Walker Buehler and taking the lead

After an insurance run, Luke Jackson took the ball in the eighth inning with a three-run cushion and Cody Bellinger made a big swing

Looking ahead to Game 4, with Julio Urias on the mound for Los Angeles and a bullpen game for Atlanta

Atlanta’s struggles at Dodger Stadium continue.

The Atlanta Braves took a 5-2 lead into the eighth inning but watched it slip away in a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 of the NLCS.

The Braves threatened to make some noise right away as Eddie Rosario and Freddie Freeman reached on back-to-back singles off of Walker Buehler to begin the game. However, the rally was cut short as Ozzie Albies lined out to Gavin Lux in center, who threw to second to double off Rosario at second. Rosario was running on contact and never had a chance to make it back safely. Buehler struck out Austin Riley to end the threat.

The Dodgers then made the Braves pay for that base running mistake in the first. Charlie Morton walked Mookie Betts to begin the inning and then hung a curveball in the middle of the plate to Corey Seager, who drove it out to center to give Los Angeles a 2-0 lead. It was basically the exact same start as Game 2, where Seager hit a high Ian Anderson curveball out for a two-run homer to kick off that game.

Morton got Trea Turner to ground out and then struck out Will Smith before walking the bases loaded. He escaped, though, as Chris Taylor popped out to Dansby Swanson at short to strand the runners. Morton needed 34 pitches to escape the inning.

Morton started to settle in from there and the score remained 2-0 until the fourth when Atlanta’s offense finally broke through.

Freeman got things started in the fourth with a single. After an Albies fly out, Riley lifted a deep fly to center that bounced off the glove of Gavin Lux. Riley was credited with a double on the play but that is a ball that Lux needed to catch. At any rate, it put runners at second and third with just one out for Joc Pederson.

Buehler’s 1-2 pitch to Pederson was called a ball but appeared to be in the strike zone. He made them pay with a single to right on the next pitch to make it 2-1. Adam Duvall followed with a broken bat flare to left that scored Riley to tie the game.

Ehire Adrianza had been on deck but he was called back and Morton hit for himself. He didn’t take the bat off his shoulder, striking out on four pitches for the second out. Buehler then walked Rosario to force in Duvall to extend the lead to 4-2. That was the last pitch Buehler threw, as Dave Roberts summoned Alex Vesia, who got Freeman to fly out to left to end the inning.

It was a tough ending for Buehler who allowed seven hits, three walks and four runs in just 3 2/3 innings. He struck out three while throwing 76 pitches.

Now with the lead, Morton dug in. He struck out Taylor to begin the fourth and got Steven Souza to pop out to Freeman. He then issued another free pass to Betts but struck out Corey Seager with a nasty curveball to leave Betts stranded.

Morton wasn’t sharp to start but he was able to keep the Braves in the game with a gutsy performance. He allowed three hits and a career-high six walks but just two runs over five innings. He struck out five and threw 96 pitches.

The Braves threatened again in the sixth and made Roberts burn through two more bullpen arms. Swanson led off the inning with a single to right. Bickford was then replaced by Justin Bruihl, who struck out pinch-hitter Johan Camargo and Rosario. Freeman followed with a single to left, his third hit of the game to put runners at first and second. Roberts then went to his pen again bringing on Joe Kelly who struck out Albies to escape.

The Braves intentionally walked Seager but Turner followed with an infield single to load the bases. However, Smith popped out to Swanson to escape.

Kenley Jansen slammed the door in the ninth by striking out the side.

It was a painful loss for Atlanta and one that they will need to put behind them quickly with Game 4 coming up Wednesday.

Atlanta have lost seven straight games at Dodger Stadium.

As the NLCS shifts to Dodger Stadium, the Atlanta Braves are looking to keep the pressure on the Los Angeles Dodgers and push them further to elimination. To do so, they are going to need to win in a stadium that they have struggled in recent history.

Since 2014, the Braves are just 20-38 at Dodger Stadium in the regular season and the playoffs and are just 4-20 over their last 24 games. They have lost seven straight and 10 of the last 11 overall.

“Not really. We lost three games here this year that we were in all three of them, we were a pitch away, a hit away,” Brian Snitker said when asked about Atlanta’s struggles in Los Angeles. “Since I’ve been managing we came in one year and I think maybe won three out of four, but since then we haven’t been really good.”

The Dodgers have been really good over that stretch and have compiled a winning percentage of at least .562 every season. They have won at least 91 games during that span and went 43-17 in last season’s 60-game regular season.

“I don’t know. I mean, they’re really tough here,” Snitker added. “It’s just kind of been coincidence, I guess, how the games have went, but I really can’t put my finger on any one thing because we did some really good things in that time, just couldn’t finish a game off.”

Dave Roberts told reporters Tuesday that Julio Urias will start Game 4 Wednesday. The Braves are likely to go with a bullpen game but Snitker didn’t want to confirm that saying that they would reevaluate and see where they are at after Game 3.

“Yeah. We’ll just probably see, we’ll evaluate after the day today to see how we’re going to go about that.”

The Braves have been asked a lot over the last few days about having a 2-0 lead on the Dodgers for the second straight season. Atlanta led 2-0 and 3-1 in the 2020 NLCS but saw Los Angeles come back and win three straight to advance to the World Series. They have talked a lot about how that experience has helped them through this postseason run. Brian Snitker agreed with that assessment and said that he really felt as though his young core took that step forward last postseason.

“I think it’s good and I think it’s good that we experienced that last year,” Snitker said. “We were a young team trying to take the next step. We kind of took the next step last year.”

Atlanta built that lead last year despite a lack of experience in the starting rotation. Max Fried and Ian Anderson are both a year removed and the team acquired Charlie Morton for exactly this type of situation.

“I think the experience of what we went through and how important every game is will be good for these guys and they will remember that,” Snitker added. “I couldn’t think of anybody else I would rather have on the mound right now for us today than Charlie.”

If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.

The NLCS will shift to Dodger Stadium Tuesday for Game 3 of the NLCS between the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Atlanta took the first two games at Truist Park and will be looking to take a commanding lead Tuesday with Charlie Morton on the mound. They will face a stiff test with Walker Buehler getting the start for Los Angeles.

Unsurprisingly, the Braves will stick with the same lineup for Game 3 of the series. Eddie Rosario sticks in the leadoff spot and Joc Pederson is back in right field hitting fifth. Travis d’Arnaud has caught every game this postseason and will hit seventh.
