Marcell Ozuna homered, but the Atlanta Braves were unable to solve Yu Darvish in a 2-1 loss.

Marcell Ozuna homered, but the Atlanta Braves were unable to generate anymore offense in a 2-1 loss to the San Diego Padres.

Bryce Elder worked around two walks in the first, but was able to escape. He ran into trouble again in the second as Ha-Seong Kim and C.J. Abrams both singled with one out. Elder then walked Trent Grisham to load the bases and then hit Austin Nola to bring home the first run. Jake Cronenworth then grounded to Ozzie Albies who flipped to second, but Cronenworth beat Dansby Swanson’s relay throw to prevent the double play. Abrams scored on the play to make it 2-0.

The Braves were unable to generate any offense off of Yu Darvish with the exception of Matt Olson who had a first inning single and a fourth inning double. Darvish then hit Austin Riley in the hand to put runners at first and second, but retired Marcell Ozuna, Travis d’Arnaud and Alex Dickerson in order to strand them.

Elder pitched around two more walks in the fourth and retired Manny Machado to start the fifth before Eric Hosmer singled. That would end Elder’s night as he would give way to Spencer Strider who got Jurickson Profar to ground into a 3-6-1 double play to end the inning.

Elder wasn’t his sharpest but he did a good job of limiting the damage. He allowed three hits and two runs over 4 1/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three while throwing 89 pitches.

The Braves finally got on the board in the seventh when Marcell Ozuna connected for a solo home run off of Darvish to lead off the inning making it 2-1.

Following the homer, Darvish struck out d’Arnaud and got Dickerson to ground out before Adam Duvall doubled into the left field corner. That would be it for Darvish who was replaced by right-hander Steven Wilson. Wilson got Eddie Rosario to fly out to center on the first pitch to end the inning.

Darvish bounced back from a rough outing in his last start allowing just four hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and didn’t walk anyone while throwing 96 pitches.

Strider held the Padres in check and gave the Braves a chance with 3 2/3 scoreless innings. He walked three and struck out three while throwing 61 pitches.

Taylor Rogers sat the Braves down in order in the ninth to seal the win.

The Atlanta Braves will try to secure their first series win of the season Sunday evening when they close out a four-game series against the San Diego Padres. The Braves fell in the opener but have since won two straight games. Bryce Elder will make his second start of the season while the Padres will go with right-hander Yu Darvish.

Ozzie Albies led off Saturday’s win with a home run and has gone deep in four of the last five games. Matt Olson has an NL best .556 on-base percentage and will hit second. Travis d’Arnaud returns to the lineup and will be behind the plate and hit fifth.

He’s getting closer...

With the Braves’ offense (and outfield defense for that matter) being somewhat inconsistent to start the 2022 season, fans have been very eager for news about when Ronald Acuna Jr. will take the field for Atlanta.

Fortunately, we just got some news on that front as Justin Toscano of the AJC reported Sunday evening that Ronald Acuna will begin his rehab assignment in Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.

Acuna is just around the corner from making his major league return after tearing his ACL last season. The organization has reportedly been targeting an early May return for their superstar, based on the rate of his recovery. The timing of this rehab assignment seems easily in line for Ronald to come back to the majors on that timeline.

Acuna’s return will be a welcome sight as the Braves’ outfield has been the weakest part of the team so far this season and adding a Top 5 player in baseball to the mix obviously helps things a lot. Acuna may play some games at designated hitter early on in his return just to take it a little easier on his body as he adjusts and fully recovers. Barring a late setback, we should be only a few weeks away from seeing him hit monster homers again in the majors.

Bryce Elder will make his second career start Sunday for Atlanta.

After a rough start to their road trip, the Atlanta Braves have put together back-to-back wins and will try to capture their first series victory of the 2022 season when they wrap up a four-game series against the San Diego padres on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

Atlanta dropped the opener in lackluster fashion falling 12-1. They won the next two games behind strong pitching performances by Kyle Wright and Ian Anderson.

Bryce Elder will make his second career start in Sunday’s game. Elder was pressed into action during the opening homestand and pitched well allowing six hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings. He tired late and a pair of homers to Juan Soto and Josh Bell skewed his final line.

Right-hander Yu Darvish will make his third start of the season for the Padres and will be looking to bounce back from one of the worst outings of his career. Darvish held the Diamondbacks hitless for six innings, albeit with four walks in his debut start. He then failed to get out of the second inning against the Giants allowing eight hits and nine runs. The Braves have had some success against Darvish who has allowed 26 hits and 15 runs in 23 1/3 career innings against Atlanta.

Ozzie Albies began Saturday’s game with a homer and has now homered in three straight and four of his last five games. Matt Olson is 5-for-11 in the series with a double, a homer and three walks.

Sunday’s game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and is scheduled to get underway at 7:08 p.m. ET.
