Ronnie is having a tough time getting healthy.

Before Thursday night’s game against the Phillies, there were good feelings surrounding the Braves. They had won a couple games in a row and had a chance to win the series with Kyle Wright on the mound. In addition, Ronald Acuna Jr., who had to miss Wednesday’s game with a Grade 1 quad strain, was expected to only miss one more game with the pre-game reporting making it seem like he was moving around well while working out Thursday.

Unfortunately, things unraveled after that as the Braves couldn’t get anything going offensively off of Aaron Nola in a 4-1 loss to a key division rival. As for the good feelings about Acuna’s imminent return, well....

Ronnie has had a bit of a rough road staying on the field since returning from knee surgery. The Braves tried their best to temper expectations as to when he would return to begin with, but with the team scuffling and Acuna looking so good in rehab, the issue was forced. However, a groin injury and now a quad injury have since slowed his full integration back into the lineup since he was activated from the IL. On the one hand, it is nice that the Braves are sticking to their guns and being cautious with Ronnie’s health. On the other hand...it sure would be nice to have the Braves’ best player in the lineup as they look up at the Mets in the standings.

For now, it appears that the team will continue to evaluate Ronnie on a day by day basis as he manages his latest ailment. Hopefully this time, it is actually just one more game.

The search for an actual winning streak continues.

Aaron Nola usually saves at least one of his best starts of any given season for the Atlanta Braves. Tonight ended up being one of those nights, as the Braves were unable to get anything going against Nola in a 4-1 defeat against the Phillies.

Kyle Wright was on the mound for 6.2 innings and aside from a huge wobble in the third inning and the end of his stint, Wright was right on the money. After retiring the Phillies in order over the first two innings, Wright immediately found himself in big trouble as he started off the third by giving up a home run to J.T. Realmuto.

Wright then followed this up by letting the next three Phillies batters reach base, so he was in a deep conundrum with nobody out. Fortunately, Kyle continued what’s been a positive development for him this season, which is the fact that he’s figuring out how to pitch himself out of trouble. He struck out Alec Bohm to finally get the first out and then managed to get Bryce Harper to ground into an inning-ending double play to mitigate the damage to just one run.

Usually, a moment like a team failing to score with the bases loaded and nobody out would be the impetus for the opposition to make a rally, but the Braves were unable to get anything going for themselves with Aaron Nola on the mound tonight. Nola delivered what was easily his best performance of the season. Dating back to 2017, Aaron Nola has had at least one start per year where he’s gone at least seven innings with one run allowed at the most against the Braves. Tonight was apparently time for the Braves to take their annual whooping from Nola, as they had no answer for what he was throwing their way in this one. Nola eventually finished with 8.1 IP, five hits allowed, 10 strikeouts, and no walks at all. Folks, that’s domination.

Welp!

Even with Nola’s domination, Kyle Wright was able to keep the Braves in the game while he was out there. He eventually ran into trouble with two outs in the seventh, as a two-out walk followed by a hit-by-pitch ended Wright’s night. Will Smith was called upon to get the final out of the seventh inning. He did make it happen, but not before Odubel Herrera wasted no time giving Will Smith a rude welcome to the game. Herrera brought home Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto with a double and that made it 3-0 Phillies. All three of those runs were credited to Kyle Wright, which really spoiled what was actually a fine start from Wright.

The Phillies added another run onto their lead in the eighth inning, as Guillermo Heredia was unable to complete what would’ve been a spectacular catch of a fly ball at the wall that would’ve kept it 3-0 Phillies. Instead, Schwarber ended up on second with a double and Bryce Harper crossed home plate to make it 4-0.

Aaron Nola got the first out of the ninth inning, but his complete game shut out bid came to an end thanks to Matt Olson hitting his second double of the night in order to end Nola’s night. Corey Knebel got the call to finish off the game and in true Phillies bullpen fashion, he gifted the Braves a run. Knebel threw a wild pitch with two out that brought Olson home from third plate to ruin the shutout. That was all the Braves would get, as the game eventually ended 4-1 in favor of Philadelphia.

It’s definitely a disappointing split, as the Braves were unable to bring the good vibes to the plate that they’ve had for the past two nights. It also continues their miserable trend of not being able to win three straight games this year. All you can do in baseball is try again tomorrow, as the Braves will be facing the Marlins for the second week in a row.

Series win? Three in a row? Are both possible?

Tonight’s a pretty big night, as it’s the final game of a four-game series between the Braves and the Phillies. After taking the last two games, Atlanta’s got a good shot at not only winning this series, but also winning three games in a row for the first time all season. It’s past time for that to happen, so hopefully the Braves can make it happen tonight.

The outfield’s going to have a bit of a different look to it, as Guillermo Heredia will be playing center and Adam Duvall is moving to right field. Travis Demeritte is on the bench and if we’re being honest, that’s where he needs to be as he’s currently in the midst of an ice-cold run at the plate. Hopefully the addition of Heredia can do the trick for the Braves tonight. Meanwhile, Marcell Ozuna is a late scratch from the lineup due to “lower abdominal tightness” and he’s been replaced by Orlando Arcia.

Teams were originally scheduled to cut down to 13 pitchers on May 30.

Major League Baseball will allow teams to carry a maximum of 14 pitchers through June 19 according to a report by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. A shortened spring training brought on by the lockout put pitchers in a precarious spot coming into the 2022 season and the league and the MLBPA have continued to work on solutions. Teams were originally scheduled to cut down to a maximum of 13 pitchers by May 30.

This comes at a good time for the Braves who are in the midst of seventeen straight games without an off day. The league first instituted a maximum of 13 pitchers on the active roster prior to the 2020 season, but that rule has yet to take effect due to the pandemic and then the shortened spring in 2022. Pitchers saw an elevated injury rate coming out of the spring and moving the deadline back will hopefully mitigate some of that.

Dansby Swanson has been on a major heater lately. He’s been tearing up the Phillies in this series.

Following a very satisfying win over the Phillies to give them the lead in this four-game series, the Braves are now looking to take the series altogether with one more win tonight over Philadelphia.

If the Braves are going to pick up this win, then another solid start from Kyle Wright will be necessary in order to make that result happen. Wright has been steadily solid in his past two starts after bottoming out against the Red Sox a few weeks ago. He’s only given up one earned run over his past two starts — he tossed six shutout innings against the Marlins a few days ago and had one earned run and three overall against the Padres before that. If Wright is on his game, then it’s not hard to imagine that he can deliver another solid six innings of work tonight.

Meanwhile, Aaron Nola is getting the ball for the Phillies and the former leader of Philadelphia’s rotation has been having an up-and-down season this year. He’ll have games where he looks like the Aaron Nola that used to regularly torment the Braves, but he’s also fully capable of getting knocked around as well. Two out of his past three starts have seen him give up four earned runs, so he’s definitely in a bit of a vulnerable state at the moment. Nola does have a high strikeout rate and a solid enough whiff rate, so the Braves may fall victim to a case of the whiffs if things go poorly for them at the plate tonight. Anything is on the cards for tonight’s game, in my opinion.

The big story at the plate throughout this series has been Dansby Swanson. Swanson has been tearing up Philadelphia’s pitching this week — he racked up two hits on Monday, added three more on Tuesday and then tallied four knocks last night. We are clearly in the midst of one of Dansby’s patented hot streaks, as he’s counter his dreadful streak in April with an absolutely fiery streak here in May. Swanson has hit .211/.286/.368 with an OPS of .654 with three doubles and one homer over 38 career at-bats against Aaron Nola, so we’re going to see if Dansby’s current hot streak can overpower historical results against Nola.

It would be very nice if the Braves won this game — not just for picking up a four-game series win over a divisional rival but also because this would mean that the Braves would finally join the rest of baseball civilization in picking up a three-game winning streak for the first time this season. Even the 13-30 Cincinnati Reds have managed to string together three straight wins at one point during this season. It’s time for the Braves to get an extended run of good baseball going and tonight appears to be a prime opportunity to get this thing rolling. Let’s get it.
