Austin Riley’s 31st home run of the season staked Atlanta to a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

The Atlanta Braves continued their good homestand with a 6-2 win over the Houston Astros Friday night at Truist Park.

Kyle Wright experienced some arm fatigue after his last start in Boston and was given a few extra days of rest as a result. It didn’t take him long to dial back in. Wright allowed an infield single to Jose Altuve to start the game and then retired seven straight before issuing a one-out walk to Martin Maldonado in the third. He then shattered Altuve’s bat on a grounder to Dansby Swanson who started the 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The Braves got on the board against Lance McCullers in the third. Ronald Acuña Jr. singled to right with one out and then moved up to second on an infield single by Swanson. Austin Riley followed with his 31st home run of the season to put Atlanta in front 3-0.

Wright retired the side in order in the fourth, but Kyle Tucker led off the fifth with a long home run over the Braves’ bullpen in right center to cut the lead to 3-1. Trey Mancini followed with a single. Wright struck out Jeremy Pena for the first out of the inning but then gave up another single to Chas McCormick. He then struck Martin Maldonado with a sinker down for the second out, but couldn’t escape as Altuve followed with a single to left to score Mancini to make it 3-2. Wright came right back and struck out Yuli Gurriel swinging to escape with no further damage.

Wright allowed a two out triple to Tucker again in the sixth, but got Trey Mancini to bounce back to the mound to end the inning. That was significant as the Braves would add on in the home half of the frame. Michael Harris led off the inning with a double. Harris was originally called out, but the call was overturned by replay. After Robbie Grossman struck out, Acuña worked a walk. Swanson made them pay with a double off the wall in right center that scored both runners to make it 5-2.

Riley followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Swanson scored to make it 6-2 on a sacrifice fly by Matt Olson.

Wright would give way to Collin McHugh in the seventh. He turned in another solid outing allowing six hits, a walk and two runs over six innings. Wright struck out seven while throwing 84 pitches.

McHugh struck out two in a scoreless seventh. He came back out for the eighth and added another strikeout to his total in a scoreless inning. Kenley Jansen allowed a leadoff double to Alex Bregman in the ninth, but then retired the next three hitters to end the game.

With the win, the Braves improve to 74-47 on the season. The series will continue Saturday with Spencer Strider matching up against Astros righty Cristian Javier.

Marcell Ozuna spoke to the media prior to Friday’s game against the Astros.

Just hours before the Atlanta Braves are set to open a three-game series against the Houston Astros, Marcell Ozuna delivered a statement in regards to his early morning arrest for DUI in Gwinnett County.

Ozuna didn’t take questions, but called the incident disappointing and said it was disappointing to his team and his family. He added that he didn’t have anything further to say and that it was a legal matter. It appears he will be in uniform for Friday’s game against Houston although he hasn’t appeared in a game since August 14 in Miami.

The Braves issued a statement to WSB TV earlier today:

“The Atlanta Braves are aware of Marcell Ozuna’s arrest this morning and are still gathering all the facts pertaining to the incident. Our organization takes these matters very seriously and are obviously disappointed by the situation. As this is a legal matter, we will have no further comment until the process is complete.”

Ozuna is slated to make $18 million over the next two seasons of his contract and has a team option for 2025 that includes a $1 million buyout. He has appeared in 107 games this season and is hitting .214/.263/.393 with 20 home runs and a 70 wRC+.

The Braves will face the Astros in a rematch of the 2021 World Series.

Things don’t get any easier for the Atlanta Braves Friday as they begin a three-game World Series rematch against the Houston Astros at Truist Park. Atlanta scored a big series win over the New York Mets defeating Jacob deGrom Thursday night and have won nine of 10 overall to pull within 3.5 games of the division lead. The Astros have an 11.5 game lead in the AL West and have won two straight and seven of 10 overall.

Kyle Wright will get the start in the opener after a bout of what was described as arm fatigue. Wright experienced a velocity drop in his last start in Boston. He still pitched well allowing six hits and one run to go along with five strikeouts in six innings, but the Braves elected to give him some extra time.

Houston will counter with right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. who will be making his second start of the season. McCullers had been out with a forearm injury that suffered during the ALDS last season. He turned in a great performance in his debut allowing two hits and four walks over six scoreless innings against Oakland.

Vaughn Grissom beat out an infield hit in the seventh and then scored all the way from first on a single by Michael Harris to put Atlanta ahead for good in Thursday’s win over New York. Grissom has given the Braves a significant lift since his promotion going 13-for-32 at the plate with two doubles, two homers and 11 runs scored. Harris, who just inked a longterm extension with the club, has been red hot in August as well hitting .321/.367/.571 with a 158 wRC+.

Friday’s game is scheduled to get underway at 7:20 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
