Jake Odorizzi posted 6.0 innings of one-run ball and Michael Harris II homered to lead Atlanta past Pittsburgh in the series opener.

A rain delay proved beneficial for Jake Odorizzi once again as he turned in his longest and best start as a Brave against the Pirates on Monday night. After weather pushed first pitch back an hour, the righthander only gave up one run on four hits in 6.0 innings pitched, striking out seven Pirate batters while walking none in his first win in an Atlanta jersey. At the plate, Michael Harris II provided the main highlight in the form of an opposite-field two-run homer that gave the Braves just enough to take the opener.

With the win, the Braves improved to 76-48 on the year and have won 12 of their last 14, while the Pirates dropped to 47-75, having lost 13 of 20 so far in the month of August.

The first inning featured squandered threats for both teams. Ronald Acuña Jr. led off the game with a double tattooed at 110.6 MPH to left center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch with two outs but was left stranded. In the bottom of the frame, Odorizzi got himself out of trouble quicker than he got into it, starting this double play to escape a runners-on-the-corners-with-one-out situation.

The two sides traded baserunners with nothing to show for it in the second and were both retired in order in the third and fourth. Odorizzi sat the Pirates down on just 10 pitches in the latter frame.

Harris II broke the scoreless tie in the fifth, following up a Vaughn Grissom single with an opposite-field blast.

The momentum looked to continue as Acuña Jr. singled up the middle a few batters later, but Dansby Swanson grounded into a double play. The single proved to be the last Atlanta hit of the game.

In the bottom of the fifth, Odorizzi’s streak of consecutive Pirates retired ended at eight on an Oneil Cruz solo shot to right to cut the Atlanta lead in half. After the homer, though, Odorizzi sat down five straight Pittsburgh hitters to end his strong outing. His pitches had some great movement to them, especially as the outing went on.

AJ Minter got the ball in the seventh inning and threw a scoreless frame despite giving up a one-out single to Michael Chavis, and Raisel Iglesias did the same in the eighth even after walking the leadoff man. Kenley Jansen closed the door, earning his 29th save of the season by sitting down the Pirates’ 3, 4, and 5 hitters in order.

On a night when offense was hard to come by, one positive offensive note was the fact that after drawing some concerns about his rising strikeout numbers over the weekend, Harris II walked twice tonight, good for his first multiple-walk game of his major league career.

A six-game road trip for the Atlanta Braves begins Monday night in Pittsburgh.

After a successful homestand, the Atlanta Braves will head out on the road Monday where they will begin a six-game road trip with a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Atlanta went 5-2 and secured series wins against the Mets and the Astros last week. They will enter play Monday four games behind New York in the NL East standings with a 75-48 record. The Pirates enter the series with a 47-74 mark and are in last place in the NL Central. The Braves swept a three-game series against Pittsburgh at Truist Park in June.

Jake Odorizzi will make his fourth start of the season in a Braves uniform and will be looking for better results. Atlanta acquired Odorizzi at the trade deadline from the Astros in exchange for struggling reliever Will Smith in hopes that he could provide some depth for the rotation. The early results have not been good as he has posted a 5.93 ERA and a 7.29 FIP in 13 2/3 innings. He allowed eight hits and five runs, including three homers, in five innings in his last start against the Mets.

The Pirates will counter with 22-year old right-hander Roansy Contreras who recently returned to the major league roster and moved back into the rotation. Contreras allowed six hits, four walks and four runs over six innings against the Red Sox in his first start since July 7. He faced the Braves back on June 10 and allowed three earned runs and struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings.

Rookie infielder Vaughn Grissom had two more hits Sunday and now has a 209 wRC+ over the first 12 games of his major league career. After a quiet July, Ronald Acuña Jr. has also found himself at the plate and is hitting .315/.412/.466 in August. Acuña served as the DH Sunday, but is expected to return to right field for Monday’s opener.

Marcell Ozuna saw his first playing time in a week Sunday playing in place of Eddie Rosario who is dealing with a sore hamstring. Rosario, who missed two months at the start of the seasons after undergoing laser surgery to correct blurred vision, is hitting .230/.267/.393 with four home runs and a 78 wRC+ since returning on July 4.

Reserve infielder Ehire Adrianza will be on the bench for Monday’s opener after he was activated from the injured list Monday morning. Adrianza had been dealing with a viral infection. Ryan Goins was designated for assignment to open up a spot on the active roster.

Monday’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports South.

Atlanta hits Pittsburgh for three games vs. NL Central’s last-place team

After a daunting seven-game homestand in which they went 5-2, the Atlanta Braves hit the road for a test of a different kind.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are struggling, and the Braves will try to keep their momentum going vs. the National League Central’s last-place team.

This could be Jake Odorizzi’s moment in a Braves uniform, and it figures to be a series Dansby Swanson dominates.

Adrianza had been sidelined with a viral infection.

The Atlanta Braves announced a roster move prior to Monday’s series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Atlanta has activated infielder Ehire Adrianza from the 10-day injured list. To make room on the active roster, the Braves designated infielder Ryan Goins for assignment.

Adrianza was originally placed on the injured list on August 12 with out a designation. He was transferred to the 10-day injured list three days later with what was deemed a viral infection. The Braves acquired Adrianza from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline in exchange for minor league outfielder Trey Harris. He has appeared in three games since the trade and is 1-for-5 with two runs scored.

After playing several days without a backup infielder, the Braves added Goins to the roster on August 16. He never got into a game while on the active roster. Goins was hitting .221/.250/.272 in 72 games at Gwinnett at the time of his promotion.
