Max Fried wasn’t on point tonight. The offense let a bunch of chances go by the wayside. This was a night to forget!

Max Fried only made it through five innings as he definitely didn’t bring his best stuff to the ballpark tonight. When you combine that with Atlanta looking somewhat lifeless at the plate for the most part in this contest, that added up to a poor 3-2 loss for the Braves against the Rockies.

The frustrating tone of this game was set very early on, as the Braves ended up coming away with nothing from a bases loaded situation against José Ureña in the first inning. With that being said, the fact that the bases were loaded to begin with said more about Ureña and the Rockies and less about the Braves when it came to their offense tonight. Michael Harris II got on with an error and then Ureña walked both Austin Riley and Matt Olson to load the bases with just one out. With Ureña looking a bit rattled, the Braves had a huge opportunity to get out ahead early but instead, Travis d’Arnaud struck out swinging on what should’ve been ball four and then Eddie Rosario struck out on three pitches to squander the scoring chance.

The Braves didn’t stay completely quiet at the plate all night. In fact, it seemed like Atlanta was still going to get away with blowing that chance in the first inning as the Braves put up one run in both the second and third inning. The first run of the game came after Dansby Swanson hit a double off the fence in center field to make it 1-0 for the home team. Dansby then followed that up in the top of the third inning by making a nifty relay throw to keep the Rockies off the board at that point in the game.

Following the play at the plate to end Colorado’s half of the third inning, Atlanta doubled their lead with a pair of doubles that had Randal Grichuk looking very awkward in right field. The RBI double in particular was hit off the wall in right and that made it 2-0 in favor of the Braves. While it wasn’t exactly the most comfortable lead in the world, it was easy to imagine a scenario where the Braves did what they normally do with early-game leads and ended up riding Max Fried’s pitching coattails on the way to relatively comfortable victory.

That wasn’t in the cards for tonight’s game. Max Fried wasn’t really looking like himself tonight and the fourth and fifth innings ended up being undeniable proof that this wasn’t his type of night. It didn’t help that Brendan Rodgers led off the inning with a triple following Michael Harris II’s failed attempt at making a diving catch. C.J. Cron then wasted no time in making the Braves pay by looping the first pitch he saw into the outfield to put the Rockies on the board. Following a strikeout, Elehuris Montero hit a bouncing grounder down the left field line for a double that brought home Cron and tied the game at two runs apiece.

The fifth inning was a mess as the Rockies jumped all over Max Fried from the moment the frame began. Garrett Hampson and Randal Grichuk both hit singles to put runners on the corners and then we got the surest sign that Atlanta’s star pitcher was struggling: Max Fried committed an error. The bases were loaded with nobody out and the Braves were drastic peril of falling behind. The good news is that Fried was able to mitigate the damage and escape the inning with the game still being somewhat in the balance. The bad news is that the Rockies still managed to push a run across in order to go ahead 3-2.

Things were quiet until the eighth inning, which is when the Braves finally got another chance to make something happen at the plate. Once again, this was a scoring chance that materialized more due to the Rockies having a tough time than for anything Atlanta was doing at the plate. Carlos Estévez struck out Travis d’Arnaud and William Contreras but walked Eddie Rosario and Vaughn Grissom in between those strikeouts. That left it up to Robbie Grossman to come up with a base hit that could potentially tie the game. Unfortunately, Estévez kept the strikeout-walk-strikeout pattern going with a strikeout to end the frame and keep the Rockies ahead.

So it came down to the bottom of the ninth inning where the Braves had to deal with Daniel Bard and it didn’t go well for Atlanta at all. Bard retired the Braves in 1-2-3 order to end the game and hand the Braves their third straight loss. This is now only the second time this season where the Braves have lost three straight games and these past three have been pretty frustrating to watch since you could argue that they could’ve won all three.

Instead, tonight’s performance saw Max Fried look very rough for his standards and the bats fail to take advantage of some crucial opportunities. It was a tough night for the Braves but they’ve got no choice but to get back at it with Kyle Wright starting tomorrow.

The Braves are back in town!

The Braves are back in town, Max Fried is getting the start, an old foe in the form of José Ureña is coming back and the team in general is looking to get things back on the winning track after a slight wobble in St. Louis. Even with Ronald Acuña Jr. still out for another game, spirits should be high in Atlanta’s camp when it comes to this game. Also, Jesse Chavez is back so there are confetti and streamers all over the place as a result of that news.

Acuña missed the final two games of the road trip with lingering soreness in his surgically repaired knee. He came in for treatment during Monday’s off day and is feeling better according to Snitker who added that he would be in the lineup if the playoffs started today.

Acuña’s knee has been an off and on thing for most of the season. He has played essentially every day of late, but has been seen limping at times in the outfield and on the base paths. Acuña’s importance to the team goes without saying and the Braves are right to play it safe with him as we transition to the final month of the regular season.

Snitker also confirmed that Ozzie Albies will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday.
The Braves are back in town, Max Fried is going, and an old foe makes his return to Cobb County after a while.

Following a road trip that ended on a pretty sour note, the Braves are returning to Truist Park as they hope to get things back on track in their series opener against the Rockies.

Tonight figures to be eventful if only for the fact that our good friend José Ureña is coming back to town and making the start for Colorado this evening. This will be the first time the Braves have seen him since the 2020 season, but I’d imagine that every Braves fan will still have a very fresh memory of the multiple incidents that Ureña has had with Ronald Acuña Jr. dating back to 2018.

The obvious hope is that José Ureña can keep things strictly competitive instead going for the temptation of keeping this feud going after a year of détente following Ureña’s departure from the National League in 2021 and subsequent return to a different division here in 2022. As far as competitively speaking goes, the Braves will be running into Ureña after he had one of the worst starts of his career in his last outing. The Rangers absolutely pummeled Ureña for nine runs through nine hits and three walks over only 1.1 innings pitched. This was an utterly ghastly performance for Ureña and while he has been getting decently deep into games as of late, he hasn’t looked imposing at all in recent times.

Additionally, José Ureña hasn’t really pitched particularly well against the Braves for the most part. You’d have to go all the way back to 2017 in order to find an instance where Ureña managed to shut down the Braves for most of a contest. While a ton of stuff has changed since that time, Ureña has been consistently unremarkable and I’d honestly be a little shocked if he pitched a gem tonight. Again, he’s got nowhere to go but up following his last start so he should fare somewhat better than he did in that outing but this really should be an opportunity for the Braves to make something happen at the plate this evening.

Meanwhile, the Braves will surely be looking forward to a good result this evening as Max Fried will be making the start for the home team tonight. Fried is currently in the midst of the best season of his career and he looked every bit the part of a guy having a fantastic season when he absolutely dominated the Pirates for eight innings. It was similar to when Fried shut out the Rockies over nine innings in Colorado back in early June.

As usual, you have to take into account the fact that the Rockies are a completely different team depending on whether they play at home or on the road — Colorado’s team wRC+ at home is 97. While that’s still not too impressive on its own, you start to see why this team is currently languishing in last place as their team wRC+ absolutely plummets to an anemic 78 when they’re playing away from home. Simply put, Max Fried has got to get the job done against a team that does not hit well on a consistent basis away from the Mile High City.

Also, the Braves should have good reason to be wary of the Rockies. Colorado managed to defeat the Mets 1-0 on Sunday when New York had Max Scherzer going and also came agonizingly close to actually getting a four-game split as they gave the Mets fits during the game that took place last Friday. So while the Rockies may not look like the most formidable opponent right now, they’re still going to fight you an the Braves should be well aware of that going into this game. With that being said, the Braves have got Max Fried going on the mound as they look to face off against a pitcher who is known more for hitting one batter in particular than shutting down the rest of Atlanta’s lineup. The Braves will be favorites in this game for very good reason.

Jesse Chavez is back!

Not a big surprise, but Jesse Chavez is headed back to the Atlanta Braves. The team announced Tuesday that they have claimed Chavez off of waivers from the Angels. This marks the second time this season that Atlanta has acquired Chavez. The first came in an early season trade with the Cubs for Sean Newcomb. The team traded Chavez along with Tucker Davidson to the Angels at the trade deadline for Raisel Iglesias.

Chavez struggled in 11 appearances with the Angels allowing 15 hits and nine earned runs in 10 2/3 innings. He however pitched well during his stint with the Braves appearing in 31 games while posting a 2.11 ERA and a 2.55 FIP in 38 1/3 innings. Chavez will give the Braves another multi-inning option that can fill a variety of roles. He has been added to the 40-man roster, but is not on the active roster yet, but that should come in the next couple of days.
