After the long and winding road of the regular season, the Atlanta Braves opened postseason play on Tuesday afternoon. The results were not as desired for the No. 2 seed in the National League, with the Braves falling at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies and digging a 1-0 hole in the best-of-five NLDS matchup.

Following the conclusion of the game, Battery Power’s Brad Rowland and Eric Cole turned on the microphones for Episode 372, and topics include the following:

Max Fried did not have his best stuff, and the Braves squandered the most favorable starting pitching matchup (on paper) of the first three games

Missed opportunities were everywhere for Atlanta’s offense, including a pair of bases loaded chances that went empty in the first three innings

The Braves got into Philadelphia’s bullpen early, but were not able to (fully) take advantage

Brian Snitker made a very odd pinch-hitting decision in the fifth inning, going with Vaughn Grissom over Robbie Grossman against a left-handed pitcher in a high-leverage spot

Atlanta’s bullpen did its job behind Fried, which is perhaps encouraging for Game 2 and beyond

Matt Olson tried his best to kickstart the comeback with a three-run home run in the ninth

There was one roster surprise on Tuesday morning, and it involved Tyler Matzek

It’s going to be a series full of afternoon baseball

Looking ahead to an urgent situation on Wednesday, with Kyle Wright taking on Zack Wheeler

Much, much more

Philadelphia got to Braves’ ace, and Atlanta couldn’t make up for it with late magic in falling 7-6

ATLANTA — In the debate between rest vs. rust, the latter won out, and now the pressure’s on.

The two givens for this Atlanta Braves team — Max Fried performing at an ace level, an explosive offense feasting on opportunities — failed them early. Even some ninth-inning magic could make up for it as the Braves fell 7-6 to the Philadelphia Phillies in Tuesday’s Game 1 of their National League Division Series at Truist Park.

“We had the guys on and (we just needed) a two-out hit here and there,” said Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “As I said before, they got them and we didn’t. But we certainly gave ourselves a chance to do something big there, we just couldn’t get a big hit.”

While the Phillies were tangling with the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild-Card Round, the National League East champion Braves had five days off, and it showed. An Atlanta lineup that was third in the majors in runs had one on four hits through four innings as Philadelphia jumped out to a commanding lead.

The Braves shook off that rust, getting within one with one out in the ninth, as Matt Olson belted a three-run home run to dead center. But the comeback bid stalled with a Travis d’Arnaud ground out, and now the Braves are down in the series, and historically, it hasn’t been a good omen.

They are 15-5 when they win a postseason series opener, and 4-17 when they don’t. The Braves haven’t lost consecutive games since the middle of September — that coming vs. these Phillies in their last regular-season series — and they did lose Game 1 of last year’s NLDS vs. the Milwaukee Brewers, but of course won that series en route to a championship.

It’s up to Kyle Wright, the MLB wins leader, to help pen a home split Wednesday before the series shifts to Philadelphia.

On what went wrong, and the key for Wright, as we take Three Cuts after Game 1 of the NLDS.

1. Max Fried was off, and Phillies made him pay

Day games have been the bane of the Braves’ season, with the fewest wins (24) of any postseason team and they were three games below .500 at 24-27. If anyone was going to make that point null and void, it was Fried, who’s climbed Ace Mountain and pitched the World Series clincher last fall.

But Fried lasted all of 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits. It was the shortest postseason start of his career and tied Game 2 of last year’s Fall Classic for the most runs scored in the playoffs with the left-hander on the mound.

“I’m not going to make any excuses. I took the ball today and put us in a big hole right away, right off the bat,” Fried said.

“They came out swinging and had a good approach. Frankly, I just didn’t do my job today. The guys were counting on me to go out and have a good start and keep it a close game and I just let it get out of the way too quick.”

It was uncharacteristic stuff from Fried, who had an 11-day layoff after leaving his Sept. 30 start vs. the New York Mets after five innings with the flu. He generated a 19 percent whiff rate on the day, his lowest since July 11, a span of 12 starts, and his 20 percent whiff rate on the curveball was also lowest since that date.

“Just wasn’t able to put guys away when I needed to,” Fried said. “Maybe some two-strike pitches even though they were still in the strike zone, the balls that maybe should be a little bit outside to make them chase weaker contact, they were able to put the bat on the ball well enough to be able to get base hits and keep the line moving.”

Fried’s velocity was down across the board, including a 1.3 mph drop in his four-seam fastball. That pitch was at 92.7 mph after sitting at 94 across the regular season, and Tuesday’s average was lower than in any of Fried’s 30 outings from April-September. In a concerning trend, Fried hasn’t been near that season average of 94 mph since July 31.

“I asked him after the fourth, when he came off,” Snitker said about the drop in Fried’s velocity. “He went down and he was mad and everything. I just wanted to make sure he was OK physically. And he just kind of wasn’t firing today, pretty much.”

Adding to a day in which he didn’t look typical Max Fried, the two-time Gold Glove winner committed a throwing error, allowing J.T. Realmuto to reach in the third inning and setting the stage for the Phillies to end that inning with a 4-1. It was Fried’s first error in 18 career postseason games and just his fourth error since 2019.

The Braves will certainly look to their All-Star starter if the series extends to a Game 5 and Fried has been no stranger to October redemption. The Houston Astros got to him for six runs on seven hits in Game 2 in the World Series and Fried responded with a start that keyed a parade.

“I took the ball knowing this was Game 1 of the playoffs. I’m taking the ball and I’m ready to go,” Fried said. “The results didn’t come out the way I wanted, but I’m really encouraged with the way we battled and ended that game today, and hopefully I’ll be able to get another opportunity to get out there and redeem myself.”

2. Wasted opportunities early loomed large for Braves bats

Things started off well enough, with Ronald Acuña Jr. hitting a leadoff single in the first — as the Braves looked to counter the Phillies taking a 1-0 lead — but instead, Acuña set the trend for the lineup’s early struggles as he was left stranded at third.

The Braves had the bases loaded in the second — ending that threat as William Contreras hit into an inning-ending double play — and again in the third, only for d’Arnaud to strike out.

“We had (Phillies starter Ranger Suarez) on the ropes,” Snitker said. “He was struggling too. We just couldn’t get a big hit. We had the decks stacked in our favor three times against him. And we just couldn’t — they got big hits, and we didn’t.”

Atlanta was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners until Olson came through with his ninth-inning blast to score Acuña and Swanson. It was an expected dry spell for an offense that in the regular season was tied for third in wOBA (.340) with RISP, and from June on, nobody was better, with a 134 wRC+.

Phillies starter Ranger Suarez had been strong of late, including one run over 17 innings over his last three. But the Braves had feasted on left-handed starters, going 37-17, a .685 winning percentage that was third best in the majors behind the Astros (.778) and St. Louis Cardinals (.686), and they were second in the NL with 118 wRC+ vs. southpaws.

Add in Suarez’s problems vs. right-handers, it seemed a great matchup with Acuña, d’Arnaud, William Contreras, Austin Riley and Dansby Swanson all in the lineup. But Suarez allowed one run on three hits and the Phillies bullpen caused further headaches, especially for Swanson (1-for-5 with four strikeouts) and Riley (0-for-4 with three Ks).

3. The biggest start of Kyle Wright’s career looms

Wright will take the mound Wednesday in what stands as the biggest start of his career. The Phillies are countering with Zack Wheeler and are likely to turn to Aaron Nola in Friday’s Game 3, both of whom are riding 14 1/3 inning scoreless streaks. Needless to say, the Braves can ill afford to head to Philadelphia on the brink of elimination.

A key subplot as Wright as he looks to get the Braves back in this series is the pitch that helped him go from breakout candidate to a career breakthrough.

Going back to the makeup that made him a top-five pick out of Vanderbilt, Wright’s curveball usage surged this season, going from 12.0 percent in 2019, 13.1 percent in 2020 and 14.3 percent in 2021 to a 34.1 percent rate. Only Wright’s teammate Charlie Morton (1,103) and the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright (995) threw more than Wright’s 919.

“I made some mechanical changes. That’s kind of been a big one. I’ve also started to use my curveball more,” Wright said Tuesday. “Those two paired together has then kind of allowed me — my command’s gotten better. All my stuff, numbers-wise, has improved.”

On the season, Philadelphia was among the league’s better teams vs. the curveball, ranking third in the NL and seventh overall at 7.7 wCB, topped by Alec Bohm, who was eighth overall (6.3). But within his .211 average against on the curve, Wright was especially effective vs. the Phillies, who he held to a .130 average on the pitch, and .102/.209/.271 overall.

Wright will need to be at the top of his game starting opposite Wheeler, who had a 2.70 ERA in three starts against the Braves, including seven one-run innings with seven strikeouts when he last faced them on Aug. 3.

Max Fried had one of his worst starts of the season, and despite some late heroics from the offense, drop Game One.

Things got exciting at the end, but ultimately the Braves fell 7-6 in Game 1 of the NLDS after a rough outing from their ace Max Fried..

Fried had easily one of his worst starts of the season, and it was evident early on, he didn’t have much in the tank for today. After getting the first two guys out in the first inning, Fried then gave up four consecutive singles, the last two driving in runs and the Braves very quickly fell into a 2-0 hole.

The offense looked like it was going to immediately respond with runs in the bottom half after a leadoff double from Ronald Acuna Jr. Dansby Swanson followed with a strikeout, a theme we’ll get back to, and then Austin Riley and Matt Olson both drew walks to load the bases with one out. After Ranger Suarez fell behind 2-0 to William Contreras, he got a very favorable call on a 2-1 pitch to make the count 2-2 instead of what should have been a 3-1 count. Contreras grounded into and inning-ending double play shortly after and the Braves rally was extinguished.

There was more hard contact for Fried in the second after he gave up a 1-out double to 9-hole hitter Edmund Sosa. It didn't cost a run because he got a groundout and a sharp lineup from Rhys Hoskins to end the inning, but again, it was far from impressive for the Braves ace.

Travis d’Arnaud led off the bottom of the second with a solo HR, making the score 2-1, and making the groundball double play with the bases loaded last inning hurt even worse. But the Braves were back in the game and the crowd was back in the game too.

It wouldn’t last though.

In the top of the 3rd, Fried committed a throwing error on a JT Realmuto grounder to begin the inning, and that would mark the beginning of the end. After a very strange sacrifice bunt from Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos launched a double off the right field wall. The ball was played perfectly by Acuna in right field, so Realmuto had to stop at third, but the Phillies had another rally going. Alec Bohm followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 and Jean Segura added another run with a 2-out RBI single and the Phillies had a 4-1 lead on the Braves’ ace.

The Braves threatened again in the bottom of the third, loading the bases again, but d’Arnaud struck out to end the frame and the Braves had 5 runners left on base through the first 3 innings.

Fried’s day would come to an end in the fourth after a leadoff walk to Edmund Sosa and a 1-out double to Rhys Hoskins. Jesse Chavez replaced Fried and immediately struck out Realmuto. After an intentional walk to Bryce Harper, the Phillies produced another back-breaking 2-out hit after Castellanos ripped a single through the left side to drive in two. Fried’s final line was 3.1 innings pitched, 8 hits, 6 runs, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. The Phillies added another run in the top of the 5th with a Segura double, a sacrifice bunt, and a sac fly. The score was 7-1.

The Braves’ best offensive inning game, at least til that point, came in the bottom of the fifth when they got a 1-out walk from Matt Olson followed by a double from William Contreras. d’Arnaud then followed with a 2-run double down the left field line to make it 7-3 and at last, the Braves had some life.

After three scoreless innings from the Phillies bullpen, it looked like the Braves were going to go quietly into the night, but Acuna started the top of the ninth with a single, his third of the game, and Swanson, after the dreaded golden sombrero (4 strikeouts) in his first four at-bats, lined a double off the right field wall. Matt Olson then stepped up and launched a 3-run homer into the shrubs in center-field to make it 7-6. Truist Park was rocking.

It looked it was going to be a quick first inning for Max Fried initially who got Kyle Schwarber to ground out on the first pitch of the game. Rhys Hoskins flew out for the second out before J.T. Realmuto punched a single to right off the glove of Orlando Arcia at second. A single by Bryce Harper put runners at the corners and Nick Castellanos brought home the first run with a single to right that dropped just in front of Ronald Acuna. Alec Bohm made it 2-0 with yet another single to right before Fried got Jean Segura to ground out to end the inning. Fried threw just 17 pitches in the inning, but the Phillies were aggressive and took advantage.

The Braves looked like they were going to answer right back. Ronald Acuna Jr. doubled into the left field corner to get things started.

Second Inning

Max Fried struck out Matt Vierling to start the second, but then gave up a double down the left field line to Sosa. Schwarber moved him over to third on a grounder to Arcia who bobbled it, but recovered in time to get Schwarber at first for the second out. Hoskins then lined a 1-1 pitch to Riley to end the inning. So, Fried gave up another hit, but was able to keep the Phillies off the scoreboard.

Travis d’Arnaud got the Braves on the board in the second with a leadoff home run to left against Suarez to make it 2-1.

Fried’s struggles continued in the third as the Phillies added on. The inning started with Realmuto hitting a dribbler back to Fried, but his throw to first pulled Olson off the bag. Realmuto moved to second as Bryce Harper dropped down a bunt for some unknown reason. Castellanos struck again with a double off the bricks in right, Acuna played it nicely and was able to hold Realmuto at third. Bohm followed with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-1. Segura brought home another run with a single to center to extend the lead to 4-1. Fried got Vierling to ground out to Austin Riley at third to bring the inning to a merciful end.

That is the second bases loaded opportunity for Atlanta in the game that yielded zero runs. Suarez has tied his season high in walks with four and is at 75 pitches after three.

Fourth Inning

Fried came back out to start the fourth and walked Sosa to begin the inning. He struck out Schwarber for the first out, but Hoskins followed with a double to left to put runners at second and third with one out. That would be it for Fried as Brian Snitker summoned Jesse Chavez from the bullpen.

Chavez struck out Realmuto for the second out and then intentionally walked Harper. However, Castellanos struck again with his third hit of the game, this time a single to left that scored two runs to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 6-1.

Fried’s line was ugly. He allowed eight hits and six runs, although just four were earned. He walked one and struck out two while throwing 61 pitches. His velocity was down across the board and just wasn’t able to miss any bats.

Suarez walked the leadoff man again to start the fourth. He got Harris to bounce into a force play and then gave way to Phillies reliever Andrew Bellatti. Grossman grounded to second, but beat the relay throw to prolong the inning. Acuna singled to left, but Bellatti came back and struck out Swanson for the third time in the game.

Fifth Inning

Jesse Chavez returned to start the fifth and allowed a double to Segura to begin the inning. Vierling bunted him to third and Segura scored on a sacrifice fly by Sosa to make it 7-1. Chavez was then replaced by Dylan Lee who got Schwarber to ground out to end the inning.

Atlanta finally got something going again in the fifth against Connor Brogdon. Olson worked a one-out walk and then advanced to third on a double by Contreras. d’Arnaud followed with a double of his own just inside the bag at third to score both runners to make it 7-3.

Brogdon then walked Arcia and was replaced by Brad Hand who got Harris to line out sharply to Vierling in the right center gap. Hand then struck out pinch-hitter Vaughn Grissom to end the inning. The choice of Grissom over Grossman against a left-hander is questionable unless Grossman was hurt or something. We will find out after the game.

Sixth Inning

Dylan Lee came back out to start the sixth and began the inning with strikeouts of Hoskins and Realmuto. Harper then doubled off the base of the wall in left center prompting Snitker to go to Collin McHugh who got Castellanos to bounce out on the first pitch to end the inning.

Seranthony Dominguez took over on the mound to pitch for the Phillies in the home half of the sixth. Acuna just missed and flew out to Schwarber down the line in left. Dominguez then struck out Swanson and Riley to end the inning. Swanson has struck out in all four of his plate appearances in the game.

Seventh Inning

McHugh stayed in for the seventh and retired the side in order. Swanson retired Bohm on a nice barehanded play for the first out. Segura struck out and Vierling lined out sharply to Harris in center.

Dominguez stayed in the game and got Olson to ground out, struck out Contreras and retired d’Arnaud on a fly out to end the frame. Dominguez retired six straight hitters including three via strikeouts. His emergence has really solidified the backend of the Phillies’ bullpen down the stretch.

Eighth Inning

Jackson Stephens took over on the mound for the Braves in the eighth and retired the side in order. Jose Alvarado replaced Dominguez and after a delay while the grounds crew rebuilt the mound, retired the Braves in order to send the game to the ninth.

Ninth Inning

Stephens allowed an infield single to Harper, but nothing else in the ninth. The Phillies turned to Zach Eflin to close it out in the ninth. Atlanta wasn’t going to go away quietly as Acuna began the inning by reaching on an infield single. Swanson broke his strikeout string with a rocket over the head of Castellanos to put runners at the corners with no one out. Eflin struck out Riley for the first out, but Matt Olson tagged him for a three-run home run to straight away center to cut the lead to 7-6.

Hope you like early playoff games, because the Braves and Phillies are set to have a bunch of them.

Braves fans were decidedly less than pleased to find out that the first two games of their playoff series with the Philadelphia Phillies were going to be outside of prime time. In addition to the prevailing notion that the Braves are “cursed” in day games, parking at Truist Park during the week in the afternoons is a less than ideal situation and many fans were not pleased that they were not going to be able to watch Game One in particular because it is happening during work hours.

Well, the league announced the schedule for the NLDS and those same fans are not likely to be pleased.

Yep, all games in this series will be starting at 4:37 pm EST or earlier. As the press release noted, there is a chance that these times could change especially Games 4 and 5 if other series finish out early, but it seems likely that these are going to be the time slots. Why the Braves have to play Game 3 at 4:37 pm when there is only one other game on that day is above my pay grade.

William Contreras moves up to fifth. He’s hit there 24 times in the regular season, but never since September 21. Contreras hit Phillies starter Ranger Suarez well this year, which is probably why he’s hitting ahead of Travis d’Arnaud. Michael Harris II hits eighth against the southpaw, something he did against another lefty in the Braves clinched the NL East, but last did on August 28 before then. Robbie Grossman starts in left and hits ninth, which makes sense given the Braves’ available options. We’ll see what happens when a righty takes the hill against the Braves tomorrow.

Interestingly, Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos flip-flop a bit in this lineup. Bohm hasn’t hit lower than fifth since late July; Castellanos hasn’t hit above sixth (save two games, one of which was post-clinch for the Phillies) since late August.

Brian Snitker confirmed that Kyle Wright will start Game 2 at Truist Park Wednesday.

The Atlanta Braves released their roster for the NLDS Tuesday morning and the biggest looming question was answered as Spencer Strider was among 12 pitchers that will be carried for the series.

Snitker confirmed that the Braves will go with Kyle Wright in Game 2 Wednesday. The team is still undecided on who will start Game 3 in Philadelphia Friday. Snitker said that they were keeping their options open for Game 3.

“We’re not leaning any way, we’re going to wait and see,” Snitker said. “There’s options there. Charlie will be ready, but we’re still in conversations about Strider, how we’re going to use him. He’s going to throw a light bullpen today. But I think starting the next few days we’re not 100 percent sure how we’re going to proceed there.”

Strider ended the regular season on the injured list due to a sore oblique. The Braves took extra precautions with him and he started to ramp back up in recent days.

“Everything is good. Right now he’s feeling really good,” Brian Snitker said of Strider. He’s going to go out, throw a light bullpen today and so then we’ll kind of formulate and see how we’re going to use him.”

Asked to elaborate, Snitker confirmed that Strider would not be in the bullpen for Game 1 after throwing a bullpen session.

“We won’t use him today because of that,” Snitker said.

Tuesday’s Game 1 received an afternoon start time of 1:07 pm. The Braves have struggled somewhat in day games, but Snitker doesn’t think that the early start time will be a detriment. The team has been holding early workouts in the lead up to Tuesday’s game.

“We’ve been working out early. I’m glad we did now,” Snitker said of the early start. “I bumped the workouts early really not even knowing when we would play but figuring we would probably have one of these first two slots. We even bumped it back a little, an hour earlier, yesterday, just in preparation for they’ve been getting to bed early and having the evenings. So this will be better than playing a 7:20 game and a 1:30 game that we normally do on a Saturday/Sunday.”

More NLDS Roster notes

The Braves elected to carry 12 pitchers, one less than the maximum allowed for the NLDS. Jake Odorizzi is among that group and said that he is on the roster to provide length if needed. One pitcher who is not on the roster is 2021 postseason hero Tyler Matzek. Snitker said that Matzek had some elbow discomfort after his last appearance in Miami.

“He felt some elbow discomfort after the last outing in Miami. And he’s in Texas right now being evaluated,” Snitker said.

Matzek appeared in 42 games this season and posted a 3.50 ERA albeit with a 4.49 FIP in 43 2/3 innings. However, his strikeout rate dropped from 29.2% in 2021 to 19.6% this season and he never looked right. He spent a lengthy stint on the injured list with a shoulder problem, but had a 4.76 ERA and a 5.50 FIP over his last 10 appearances.

The Phillies have set their roster for the 2022 NLDS against the Braves.

Unlike the Braves, the Phillies already had to make a lot of decisions regarding who was worthy of the playoff roster given that they had to play in the wild card round last weekend. There is some merit to the idea that roster composition for a three game series could, in theory, be different from the roster decisions for a five game series.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson did provide a little bit of insight into some of the decisions that could be relevant for the NLDS roster including which starters were on the roster just to plan for a potential three-game series against the Cardinals. They activated some guys of the IL for the wild card series including Edmundo Sosa as a backup infielder and Brad Hand to bolster the bullpen for the wild card round. Again, nothing earth-shattering was expected from the Phillies roster announcement today.
