Atlanta survived a quixotic Dylan Dodd start and Ronald Acuña Jr. leaving after fouling a ball off his knee for a third straight win

The Braves failed to sweep the Marlins after the boys with a splash of teal in their uniforms reeled off a five-run ninth last Thursday, but this Thursday, the bullpen slammed the door after Dylan Dodd’s terribly bizarre (or bizarrely terrible) start. Thanks to early runs and homers from Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson, the Braves barely trailed and largely coasted to their third straight win.

This game had a lot of scoring early on, with five runs in the first three frames. Ronald Acuña Jr. started the game with a pop-out that was dropped by Yuli Gurriel near the right-field foul line, and came around to score on Sean Murphy’s opposite-field double that almost cleared the wall. But, the Marlins came right back against Dodd: Jon Berti reached by beating out an infield single to Vaugh Grissom at short, and then Jorge Soler obliterated a low-in-the-zone Dodd fastball to give Miami a short-lived lead. In the top of the second, Ozuna drew a walk with one out, and Eddie Rosario randomly tried to bunt before swinging at a low-and-outside slider from Jesus Luzardo and somehow rolling it weakly through the left side. Ozuna chugged in to third and drew a late throw, which let Rosario move up to second on a play that was somehow scored a double. Kevin Pillar, starting in center due to Michael Harris II’s injured knee, tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right, and then Acuña gave the Braves the lead by knocking a grounder single up the middle to score Rosario.

After that, the runs were more sparse. Acuña followed his single by stealing second and moving to third on an errant throw from catcher Nick Fortes, but was stranded there. Murphy erased a leadoff walk with a double play in the third, and Ozuna connected for his third homer in two days to make it a 4-2 game in the fourth. Murphy then hit into a double play, again, with a man on first and none out in the fifth, which stung because Ozzie Albies hit a deep drive that went for a double immediately afterwards.

The Marlins clambered within a run in the fifth: Dodd walked Peyton Burdick to start the frame and begin his descent into the third time through the order. Berti then singled on a bouncer to right that glanced off Olson’s glove, and Soler smashed a get-me-over, 1-0 changeup from Dodd into the left-field corner for an RBI double. Fortunately for the Braves, Soler’s second smash wasn’t hit high enough to be a go-ahead three-run homer, and even more fortunately, the Braves were somehow able to get Dodd through the game, despite the whole times through the order thing, because the Marlins proceeded to hit two shallow flyouts with the tying run on third. Their last hope in the fifth was Garrett Hampson, who lined out softly to a well-positioned Ozzie Albies behind the second-base bag.

Amazingly, the Braves pushed their luck by smushing Dodd into the sixth, and even more amazingly, it didn’t blow up in their faces. Dodd gave up a leadoff single to Fortes, and then collected his first and only strikeout of the game in the sixth inning. Fortes then got thrown out trying to steal (botched hit-and-run, maybe?), and though Dodd again walked Burdick and even had to face Berti a fourth time, the pesky Marlins hitter flew out harmlessly to Acuña in right.

Speaking of Acuña: as the last man in the top of the sixth, he fouled a ball hard off his knee (not the surgically-repaired one) and rolled around in agony for a while before resuming the PA and striking out. He stayed in to play the field for an inning, but departed before the bottom of the seventh.

Jesus Luzardo departed right before that Acuña PA; he had a meh 5/3 K/BB ratio and allowed a homer in 5 2⁄3 innings. Dodd’s start was something that makes little sense but you’ll still see a few times a season: despite a 1/3 K/BB ratio and a homer allowed, he somehow only got charged with three runs and made it through six frames. His command wasn’t pinpoint as we saw in St. Louis, but it was fine — rather, the issue was that his changeup and slider didn’t get any whiffs outside the zone and his changeup really didn’t get any whiffs at all. But hey, he and the Braves survived.

The Braves weren’t able to push a run across in the seventh when Grissom struck out with men on the corners to end the inning. Michael Tonkin had an easy bottom of the seventh thanks to a double play that erased Soler after a single — Soler finished a triple shy of the cycle. Dylan Floro sat the Braves down 1-2-3 in the eighth, but Nick Anderson returned the favor against the Marlins in the bottom of the inning.

The Braves did extend their lead and avoid any Marlins one-run game shenanigans in the ninth: Olson homered off A.J. Puk, and then Grissom hit a sacrifice fly to right after a single-walk-single sequence immediately after the homer. Skip Schumaker decided to add to the weirdness of this game by pulling Puk (a lefty) with two outs in the eighth with Marcell Ozuna (a righty) due up in favor of Steven Okert (another lefty). Ozuna flew out to left to end the inning.

A.J. Minter had the ninth, and made short work of the Marlins. A fly out, a strikeout, a single up the middle, and then a strikeout of Soler, and that’s it, Braves are off with a sweep and a six-game lead in the NL East, where they are the only team above .500.

The Braves will kick off a homestand on Friday night by welcoming the surprising Orioles to town. Max Fried is set to kick off the weekend for the home team.

Dylan Dodd vs. Jesus Luzardo

The Braves go for a sweep over the Marlins on Thursday afternoon, and we all hope it turns out better than the last time they tried to do so. Dylan Dodd is back and it’s time to see whether he can pull off the same type of command that he managed in his first career start.

The Mets already lost, so this is a chance for the Braves to gain a game on both them and also the Marlins, who also started the day in second place, so let’s get to it.

With Michael Harris II out after hurting his knee and a lefty on the mound, it’s Kevin Pillar’s turn to patrol that cavernous outfield.

After Michael Harris II hurt his knee yesterday, it’s Kevin Pillar’s turn to roam the spacious center field in Miami.
Dodd was very good in his debut, then very bad in his second start. What will Thursday afternoon bring?

For the second time in two Thursdays, the Braves will play an afternoon game seeking a sweep of the Marlins. Last time, the attempt ended in a minor manifestation of agony, as the Braves suffered a five-run ninth after leading 4-0 for most of the game and ended up losing in improbable fashion. This time, well, things will probably be different.

With the Braves choosing to push Max Fried back a day, they’ve called up Dylan Dodd to take the start in this one. Dodd’s had an adventure of a 2023 so far. To recap: he was great in Spring Training, and then showed pinpoint command while eviscerating the Cardinals (5 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K) in his major league debut. He was way less great his next time out, as a combination of beyond-disheveled command and something akin to tipping his pitches led to a brutalization at the hands of the Padres (two homers, 3/1 K/BB ratio in 4 1⁄3 innings). Since then, he’s made three starts in Triple-A, where he really hasn’t been impressive: 4.72 FIP, 4.30 xFIP. So, all in all, this is less a deserved call-up and more of a battlefield promotion.

With that said, Dodd clearly has a path to success — not just against the Marlins, but in general. If he can show the type of command he did against the Cardinals, he’s immediately a major league fixture, because he was plinking the corners with impunity. Even if he can’t, decent command and a really confusing slider-thing should probably be fine, so long as he isn’t telegraphing when it’s coming. Of course, having decent command is far easier said than done, even if you’re a relatively soft thrower like Dodd. On the flip side, the Marlins are 22nd in team wRC+ (89) and 25th in xwOBA coming into this game, so Dodd isn’t exactly being thrown to the wolves (fish?) here.

After Braxton Garrett was obliterated but also forced to stay in the game by his management last night, the Marlins will send Jesus Luzardo to the hill on Thursday afternoon. Luzardo is having a strong year through six starts so far: 82 ERA-, 86 FIP-, 93 xFIP-, and an xwOBA/xERA pretty close to his FIP. He’s only had a couple of bad starts so far, and hasn’t walked more than a couple of batters since his first outing. He throws hard and gets a lot of horizontal movement on his four-seamer, while pairing it with a gyro-slider-cutter-thing. One thing that’s interesting about Luzardo so far is that his four-seamer has been thrown low in the zone and often ineffectually elevated. Usually hard throwers that get lots of pop-ups do so by throwing at the top of the zone, but Luzardo has seemingly benefited from missing the barrel with his horizontal movement when batters try to uppercut his offerings. He is allowing an elevated barrel rate, but not much in-between contact, which could either work out great or poorly for the Braves depending on their HR/FB fortunes.

Luzardo faced the Braves twice last year. In August, in the famed Trompical Storm game, the Braves’ awesomely-named catcher had three hits, including two off Luzardo, in a 5-2, easy-enough win. But, with the Braves looking to clinch the division in October, Luzardo dominated them with 12 strikeouts and a single walk in six scoreless innings, as the Braves fell 4-0. The Braves also crushed him in a 2021 start.

Anyway, the Braves are rolling, and they’ve essentially had no problem with the Marlins aside from one inning so far this season, so we’ll see what happens.

Wright left Wednesday’s start with shoulder soreness

As expected, the Atlanta Braves have placed Kyle Wright on the 15-day injured list due to soreness in his throwing shoulder and have recalled left-hander Dylan Dodd from Gwinnett. Dodd will start Thursday’s series finale in Miami.

Wright left Wednesday’s start in the third inning of Atlanta’s 14-6 win. He cruised through the first inning, but then had a noticeable velocity drop. Wright allowed three straight hits to start the third which prompted a visit by pitching coach Rick Kranitz, who later signaled for the trainer. Wright said after the game that he lobbied to stay in the game, but that exiting was the correct call.

The news is troublesome considering that Wright received a cortisone shot in his shoulder in January which delayed his start to Spring Training and subsequently the regular season. Wright has made five starts and has a 5.79 ERA and a 4.53 FIP in 18 2/3 innings.

Dodd made two starts at the major league level to open the season while Wright was on the injured list. He was solid in his debut limiting the St. Louis Cardinals to one run over five innings. However, he was hit hard next time out allowing 10 hits and seven runs in just 4 1/3 innings against the San Diego Padres. He was optioned to Gwinnett where he has made three starts and has a 4.91 ERA and a 4.72 FIP in 14 2/3 innings.

It could be a one off appearance for Dodd as the Braves have a pair of off days next week and could juggle their rotation. Raisel Iglesias is currently on a rehab assignment with Gwinnett and could be ready to rejoin the team for the upcoming homestand.

Braves had a hole in their rotation schedule this week after the all the rain in New York caused them to have to play a double-header Monday. Having to use two starters in one day and no off days this week meant the Braves would have a game either Thursday or Friday this week that needed to be filled. When they decided to move Max Fried’s start to Friday, Thursday became the hole in the schedule, and Dodd will be called on to pitch. A bullpen was a possibility Thursday, but after starter Kyle Wright had to leave Wednesday’s game early with shoulder soreness, the bullpen had to cover too many innings for that to be feasible.

After a strong spring which won him an Opening Day job, Dodd had mixed results early on for Atlanta. His first start on April 4th was tremendous, going 5 innings with 1 earned run at St. Louis. But his next start at home vs San Diego was much less fun, as the rookie struggled through 4 innings, giving up 7 earned runs to a powerful Padres team. Thursday’s game will be Dodd’s third start of the season.

Offensive firepower overshadowed by unfortunate injuries

The Atlanta Braves’ offense came alive Wednesday night with a 14-6 win over the Miami Marlins. The game was filled with plenty of offensive fireworks throughout, but it was also a game filled with a couple of unfortunate injuries as well.

Atlanta came out swinging early as they jumped on Miami’s Braxton Garrett in the second inning. A walk by Sean Murphy followed by singles from Ozzie Albies and Vaughn Grissom loaded the bases for Marcell Ozuna who delivered as he mashed a grand slam on a ball I’m still not sure has come down yet.

Wright worked a scoreless first, but struggled after the long top half of the inning. Jesus Sanchez and Jean Segura started the inning off by getting back to back hits which put them on second and third. Nick Fortes then hit a fielder’s choice, scoring Sanchez. Just when it looked like the Braves would get out of the inning with only one run coming across, Vaughn Grissom would make an unfortunate error by overthrowing Matt Olson which led to another run.

The Braves would pick right up where they left off in the third as Ozuna crushed his second home run of the night to extend the lead to 8-2.

Wright came back out in the third, but gave up back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to 8-3. Jesus Sanchez followed with a single which prompted a visit from Braves pitching coach Rick Kranitz. He was later joined by team trainers and manager Brian Snitker. Wright would exit with what was termed as right shoulder soreness. Brian Snitker confirmed after the game that Wright will go on the injured list.

Collin McHugh replaced Wright and was met immediately with back to back singles from the Marlins which would score a run making the score 8-4. McHugh would manage to get out of the inning with no more damage being done going into the fourth.

The Braves added on in the fifth. Things got rolling with back to back singles from Ozuna and Kevin Pillar. Ronald Acuna Jr. would then crush a three-run shot to dead center field bumping the score up to 11-4.

Harris exits after stumbling over the first base bag in the sixth inning.

Having already lost Kyle Wright to an undisclosed injury, the Atlanta Braves weren’t looking for any more bad news Wednesday night. However, they got some as Michael Harris exited the game after stumbling over the first base bag in the sixth inning. Harris appeared to hyperextend his right knee on the play.
